What did you do in the garden today?

Hubby and I went away for a weekend retreat. Nice to get away but I'm trying to catch up on posts.

Carrots - I've had mixed success. I tried Danvers and Parisian carrots (short, fat little carrot balls). They either didn't grow at all or pretty much were so tiny to be useless. Last year I tried Purple Cosmic carrots instead. I was careful to sow them thinly. These turned out a little better. They were, on average, 4" - 5" long. Not huge but enough to actually eat. The flavor was very good. Best "fresh" carrot I've ever eaten. I planted them late last year so I'm hoping to see what I get from a full season this year.

I noticed the aloes are going to bloom soon, the resident hummingbirds will be quite happy about that.
I want to see your aloes when they bloom! I know I could google it, but I'd rather see yours, lol. I have a giant aloe plant, well as giant as it can be in a pot in my window, & I've never seen one bloom. We certainly don't have the weather for it here, but my aloe does well despite it. It was a plant that came from my grandmother, I've had it for 20 years probably & everyone I know has a baby from it. :gig

We went from 60 degrees yesterday to snow today. Just finished shoveling so the birds will come out.

I pulled the basil from the aeorgarden & potted it for my sister. I started 2 more pods of lemon thyme as my seeds came in from etsy. I had no idea how small thyme seeds were. Sheesh.

It’ll be a couple weeks yet but no problem!

It's February in New England, and too early to really even start seeds to plant outside, realistically. I cheered myself up by getting a bunch of (cheap, and I fear it will bite me!) bulbs. I got some shallow, wide plastic planting pots, with lots of drainage holes. I just arranged a variety of the bulbs in each pot, set each pot in a bowl, and scattered some tiny seashells for interest around on top. I gave them away as thank you gifts. I have a few bulbs leftover, so I will see if any of them pop! I also am so hungry to plant something that I took a cracked cup and put some soil in it, and dropped in 5 marigold seeds that I saved from last year. We will see. It cheers me up to have something to hope for!

Good afternoon all. My fingernails are filthy and it’s officially warm outside today, I needed to come in for a break. I started watering before the sun came up, then we went to the park to play with the dogs and made a trip to Home Depot for soil. I had ten pavers I had to pull up, re-level the ground underneath and replace. It looks much better! I also dug out the Texas sage, didn’t find a replacement so I got a firecracker bush. It has a clump grass look to it but has coral colored flowers. That’s probably as close to pink as I’m going to get in hell’s full sun. I also found out what the shrubs are that I have in a corner against a wall…emu bushes native to Australia, I saw some today at HD and haven’t been able to remember that for years. I’m headed out to mulch a few things and plant onions, then make cornbread and coleslaw to go with dinner. Thank goodness hubs is going to BBQ cuz I’m going to be toast this evening.

Aaand we are having snow! I am beside myself with envy.

Don’t worry, I’ll be quite envious of you come summer!
All my brothers and my sister live much farther south. That is our constant gibing and joking. All winter they twit me with their temperatures. All summer I get to gloat.
