Good morning gardeners. Nice looking beds @Sueby. I've found that parsley does well in the ground and it reseeds itself. I have had a steady crop of parsley in the warmer months since I started the separate herb beds a few years ago. Oregano does well also. My beds are a little larger than yours so I have lavender in each one. I keep rosemary and mint in separate pots. I'm going to try Russian tarragon in pots this year. What I planted in the ground didn't grow. I prefer the Russian tarragon because it is a perennial once it gets established. French tarragon is an annual here. Another warm day here today with rain moving in this afternoon. I checked the soil in the backyard garden bed yesterday and it is frozen solid. Also forecasted to get snow and maybe another messy mix on Friday. Wah!

I have lots of the metal beds, they work great here in CT, not sure how they'd do in a much hotter climate tho. I like them better than wood, wood rots here too quickly. The galvanized beds are holding up much better than the cedar ones.

Yeah I'm down south...they look so nice but I bet my climate wouldn't work well with em!

That's what I'm hoping for, better survival for the herbs that can hang on here in CT. Rosemary will always have to be in a pot & come in for the winter, but the others should do better in the beds, I hope.

The thyme is the biggest issue, some years it comes back, some it doesn't & it's what I use the most, I love it. The mint & sage always do well so they can stay out in their big pot. Lavender is in the ground & does fine. I hadn't thought about parsley, I usually just plant a new one every year in a pot but I'll have to put this in a bed somewhere & see what happens!

I was going to say, but forgot, I'd love to just plant the walking onions & thyme in the ground around the garden perimeter - but the dog will pee on them so they have to be inside the gates so raised beds it is.

I was the same with the parsley until I put in the herb beds. I was amazed when it came up the second year. I use a lot of parsley and thyme as well. I planted a second batch of parsley in the other bed so I have parsley and thyme is both beds. Right now you can see both looking almost like I could pick some now. My chives were slow starters and it's been in the ground for over 2 years now but is starting to show some promise finally. Perhaps try a different variety of thyme and see if you have better luck with that.

I get that. I was going to dig out a bush and replace it until I changed my mind

Love the metal beds.... Here's a few pictures of mine. They work fine in warm climates. DH just makes end frame pieces and then attaches the metal. Saves on wood and holds up just fine. Then I put a bunch of leaves, straw, compost in the bottom before the soil mix.

I have 8 of these raised metal beds. My climate is similar to yours and they work great for me....

Morning all.

Warmed up nicely yesterday. I got the little coop cleaned out. Got my 2 new small raised beds for the herbs put together.

Now I just need the dirt pile to thaw so I can fill them.

I love your little raised beds! What kind of metal did you use on the sides? What are those little connector plates? Was that a kit or something you just put together ?
I wouldn’t mind copying that!
