What did you do in the garden today?

Love the metal beds.... Here's a few pictures of mine. They work fine in warm climates. DH just makes end frame pieces and then attaches the metal. Saves on wood and holds up just fine. Then I put a bunch of leaves, straw, compost in the bottom before the soil mix.

Will you tell me more about your buried milk jugs? I’m figuring it’s for slow watering ! ❤️ Did you poke a bunch of holes in the sides? What about the bottom ? Then you just fill them up when you want to water and your all set! I want to copy that too!

I love your little raised beds! What kind of metal did you use on the sides? What are those little connector plates? Was that a kit or something you just put together ?
I wouldn’t mind copying that!
Yes, they are kits - galvanized steel. I got most of them from Amazon. I have (4) 4x4, (4) 6x4 & then the 2 small herb ones I just got, the small one is 2x2 I think & I have no clue on the octogon one. The 6x4s are taller & I like them so I don't have to bend.

I'm sure I could have made them cheaper but I just don't have the time, this was easier.

Yes, you got it! It tends to get REALLY dry and hot here in the summer with long stretches between rain. Especially in July & August. I use the jugs to slow water below the gradeline without encouraging disease from wet leaves, etc....(that whole heat+humidity thing 🙄 ) This is especially important with the raised beds where the soil is naturally warmer because of sun exposure on the metal.

So far, all the plants I've put in the raised beds (raspberries, blueberries, asparagus, chokeberries, and various flowers) have all thrived really well in the raised beds.

I bought 4' x 8' galvanized roof panels from Lowes for about $12/each. DH cuts them into strips based upon the size I want. Of course, he hates doing it because cutting metal isn't fun. Then I use (1) 2x4 on each end to make the frame. So essentially I spend about $30 (with current outrageous inflation) for each bed. My beds vary from 4' x 2' to 8' x 3'. Generally I make them about 6' x 2'.

You can also use an old terra cotta pot with a cork in the bottom of it. Bury to almost the rim, fill with water and cover with a saucer. I cover mine with mulch to keep as much moisture as possible.

The girls and the rooster are enjoying their expanded area. I’m still not finished with the expansion yet but they are right there checking it all out
I love watching mine when they get a new area to vandalize explore! But I really do love to watch them explore, all the chit chatting and scratching.
My little EE isn't feeling well, been moping around since yesterday. I'm hoping she's just coming into lay & is feeling weird? Is that a thing?
I'd take a good look at her crop and vent, and check her weight. When mine mope it's usually something is or is going wrong. :(
Walking onions going in one & I think thyme & sage in another. I think anyway, subject to change at any time.
Same with me, that's why I like to put changes off, gives me plenty of time to second guess myself. :)
I have lots of the metal beds, they work great here in CT, not sure how they'd do in a much hotter climate tho. I like them better than wood, wood rots here too quickly. The galvanized beds are holding up much better than the cedar ones.
Nice garden, did you leave a space to get a wheelbarrow or cart in past the fence? Did you put down a weed barrier to keep the aisles so nice and weed-free?
I'm going to try Russian tarragon in pots this year. What I planted in the ground didn't grow. I prefer the Russian tarragon because it is a perennial once it gets established. French tarragon is an annual here.
How do you like the flavor on the Russian tarragon? I'd always heard that it had no flavor and so I've always stuck with French tarragon. That said, sometimes my tarragon just seems bland with too little flavor.
I was going to say, but forgot, I'd love to just plant the walking onions & thyme in the ground around the garden perimeter - but the dog will pee on them so they have to be inside the gates so raised beds it is. :rant :gig
THIS!!! This is why we don't have male dogs, and fence the raised beds to keep the outside male cats out.

The dinner went well and the kitchen is clean again! This morning I planted a tray of celery starts but it's supposed to get down to 23 tonight which is nothing to a lot of you folks but that is mighty cold for here. We got a good deal of rain the last 2 days so I can't complain too much.

I know yall have been on this thread a lot longer than I have so just thought I'd ask...
Do yall ever share your garden layout, plans for the upcoming season? I'm a visual person and am trying to get an idea of how best to use the new space I've got in back near the run.
Yup, we do!
