What did you do in the garden today?

How cold is it supposed to get? Your onions will probably be fine, mine have handled snow before. I think it's more cold that will get to them. Heck, I found an onion in a bed yesterday that had made it all winter here in CT! If you do make the covers post a pic, I'd love to see it.

& I do love those beds, a friend was supposed to make me one then COVID hit. I have plexiglass panels that fit my beds but they are a bit hard to move around. (I ripped my big toenail completely off last year getting one in place, lol)

So I cooked a pecan pie cheesecake in the pressure canner, looks good but won't eat it till tonight. I now have beef bones in there, started at an hour with no veggies. I will check on it & see if it needs longer to mush the bones & will decide if I want to add any veggies or herbs then. Then I'll can the broth. Then I'll do chicken. (still cleaning out the freezer here - look at me go!)

Some stupid squirrel tore through the bed with the walking onions. :he I knew I should have covered it, my fault I suppose.
Dropping from 70s to 30s... The thing I'm more concerned about is the rain, snow mix that comes with it. I bedded it with straw, and I will probably cover it with a board. We'll see. I was supposed to have my potatoes and peas in this week too. Guess that's going to wait. That pie sounds AMAZING!!!!!!!!! How frustrating about the squirrel!

Ya, 76 yesterday, 50 today with drizzle, and snowflakes in the morning. LOL
Typical.
Working on a vent system for the hoop house. was over 100 yesterday with the door and window open and a light breeze.
Still on the prowl for thornless blackberry canes. Might be a couple weeks too early yet to find them.
Warm enough for the voles (giant ones) to start coming out at night in the pasture, so trapping is well underway.
Windows need washed, maybe Saturday.
So much to do, but still just a tad early to do it. Might take the day and go pick up my fleece from the mill.

So I know a couple people were interested in my pressure canning results...I cooked the beef broth for (2) 120 minute runs. I added an onion, 2 bay leaves & lots of peppercorns before the 2nd 120 min process. The bones were soft, but not falling apart as much as I'd have liked, but it was bed time. Chicken bones will be quicker. It is delish, so much so that I'm not sure I'd bother adding carrots or celery next time. I then added a tsp of salt to each quart jar & they're processing now. I like this canner, it did fault out on me last night again so I'm not sure it's ok, def going to let them send me another. But it's super easy to use.

That is my life story right now! So warm out I want to get it all done, but I know it'll be cold again so I need to contain myself. LOL

The Etsy shop I ordered the egyptian walking onions from sent me a free packet of pak choi (I assume it's the same as bok choy). I may try & plant it, not sure if I'll like it or not but worth a shot. I do like cabbage. Is it cabbagy tasting?

Good morning gardeners. Trying to just keep up with the thread. We finally got our break from really cold temps. I moved most of the straw from the asparagus patch. I’ll give it a bit more time from uncovering it completely. Finally getting some seeds started. I started working on the chicken yard expansion yesterday. I got a rope lined up for my guide to installing the fence posts. I’ll be pounding some T posts after I finish my coffee. I know the girls will love all that new space to forage in. I’m hoping to get two of my garden beds covered with plastic to warm the soil up enough to plant the cool season crops of lettuce, kale and radishes. I’m skipping peas again this year. As far as humanure. A big eeeuuuh! I’m sorry, some types of poo are just not designed for vegetable gardens. I’ll stick with my own chicken poo and composted herbivore poo. If it’s being used in commercial agriculture then good golly, no wonder there’s so many recalls for e coli. Just saying. A belated happy birthday to our birthday girls. So glad to hear you are getting around better @jerryse. Definitely go through with the replacement pressure cooker @Sueby. I know you are short on storage space, but you could always donate the first one. Have a great day all.

No not all that much. Much milder. Cooks up easily in a frying pan or wok. Oil, garlic and a few red pepper flakes and a little soy sauce. Sauté until just a little tender but still toothsome. So tasty.
