What did you do in the garden today?

So I mentioned the broody the other day who I moved into a special pen to keep her segregated? Well, it appears all 4 babies have hatched! Woooohoooo!

On a separate note, I have 3 broody Silkies who have all decided to jam into the same SMALL nesting box.... Smh. I'm going to have move some of them or the babies will be squashed in no time.
When my Bantam Cochins all sit in one nest they scramble the eggs. Each bird has to turn the eggs 40 times a day until they scramble them completely.
Congrats on the little ones though! :love

Intervention please! In the past two hours I’ve placed 2 ( yes, two) orders for chicks.

One is for White Plymouth Rock males to grow to about 16 weeks and butcher (and yes, I added 4 females too). Those will be a pickup in about 4 weeks.

Then another was for other breeds I can’t get at the hatchery I usually use. All female order for Egyptian fayoumi, Silver Spangled Hamburg, Buckeye, and Barnvelder. Those will be for August pickup.

Aaaand, will likely order standard Cornish Cross for late Aug pickup at my usual hatchery for an Oct butcher date. But, I haven’t placed that order YET!

We WILL be selling several chickens in early April. And we will likely sell more in September to clear out the ones we don’t want to care for through the winter, keeping the new chicks, of course!
Sounds like work!

Good afternoon all. The dog ate a rotten egg she found somewhere in the yard, I have no idea where it was. She promptly threw up on the kitchen floor and my bed :rantSmells nasty, but thankfully we have a mattress pad. So instead of doing stuff outside I had to clean up the mess and change the bed. It still smells horrible in here, but I have a strong candle burning and am keeping an eye on the dog. I think I have some Ozium..I’ll see y’all later

I just put a dog crate in there with its own nesting box. I moved the biggest hen in there with 3 eggs of her own. She seems to be taking to the new digs really well.

That still leaves 2 relatively smaller hens in the main nesting box with God knows how many eggs. I'm betting there's easily still 6 eggs in there.

I let the first broody stay there with 3 or 4 eggs on purpose. She's a first time mom. The other 2 broodies decided to crash her pad. They've both hatched eggs previously as first time moms so these would be their 2nd hatches. The one in the dog crate killed all hers by stepping on them so I'm a little nervous about how she will do this time.

You DO know this is not over right?
The bacteria from that thing is ravaging that dog's gut as we speak.
Give it to the end of the day and that dog is not going to pinch a coil, it's going to Mt. St. Helens somewhere. Might want to make sure when doggy whines to go out, you accommodate PROMPTLY ! Might take a day or so to settle things out but remember, dogs dig up dead stuff and eat it too, so doubtful rover is going to be too bad off.
