What did you do in the garden today?

@karenerwin - I'm sorry, that's awful. :hugs How is everyone today?

Cold rain here, nothing happening in the garden. I had to go open the auto door because it was too dark to open on its own & the girls were getting annoyed! Garden could use a good rain, settle all the stuff I put in the new beds.

I did notice yesterday a couple more walking onions coming back to life & my lettuce is coming up.

45 deg here today but not much sun. Might work on getting some gardens turned and see about adding some compost. Only in the 30s tomorrow but with the winds will feel like teens, so no work tomorrow. Weekend brings the uppers 40s back and into next week. Hopefully will be able to get some beds weeded, composted and covered again with plastic to warm.

Strawberry plants to come end of April into May so I need to get a few more beds made and ready :)

The more you talk anout that chipper the more I Want one. :hmm
Me dos!!!
With Hemp growing everywhere now for cbd this and cbs that...none of em locally are chipping up the plants to sell!
Why not? I'm gonna grow me some Hemp and get a chipper! I've never smelt a coop smell so good but I can't keep paying nearly $20 for a small bag of it!

Well my “ putting off what needs to be done” came back and bit my with a vengeance 😞
I knew a section of fence between the dog yard and the chicken run was weak. Some of the poles snapped off at the bottom and the fence was leaning in a lot. I had even take a heavy duty pole out there to shore it up but couldn’t get it in the ground without the pounder. I just hadn’t gotten around to taking the pounder out there.
I let the dogs out like usual this morning and then sat and relaxed at the kitchen table. After an hour or 2, maybe even 3, I realized that the dogs hadn’t knocked on the door to comeback in. So I went to call them in. They weren’t in their yard. You guessed it. They were in the chicken yard. 😞
I never heard any of the chickens or the rooster make any commotion. The dogs came when I called them and I had to unlock the gate to let them out. They have never come out of the chicken yard voluntarily before, so I think they had been in there a while.
I had to put down 2 chickens. 1 was just approaching point of lay and had made the bad choice to fly over from the other chicken yard. The other was an older Barred Rock. I thought the rooster was dead too but he was up and walking around when I got back out there from locking the dogs up. We will see how he does. There are 2 other older hens that I’m not sure how injured they are. 1 is hiding up under the coop and I can’t get to her. The other one came in the coop at lock up.
Needless to say, I got out there and not only installed several heavy duty poles I also installed cattle panels over the field fence ( or hog fence?) that was already up.
I feel like I am as much to blame as the dogs are.
So, don’t be like me, go mend those fences.
Oh im so sorry! That had to be awful!

Hemp thru a chipper?
Im assuming you will probably get one of the 'people grade' ones.
ie I got the Harbor Freight electric one and that thing has been a work horse like you could not imagine. Ive beat the everliving crap out of it and it keeps chugging right along. !!

Gas powered ones, bigger, stronger, a LOT more expensive, but anyways to the point.

Running Hemp thru it? Isn't hemp real fibrous / stringy? Wouldn't that raise total hell with the chipper, getting twisted and wound around it with the fibers and clogging it. I know certain palm fronds, trying to chip them, oof yah, now I need the screwdriver and socket :(

Maybe there is a reason they are not mulching it.

ah...had no idea! guess that may very well be why so few places do it and why it costs so dadgum much everywhere!
thanks for the info!

Ask around, get some info before saying, here's a chipper, herre's a hemp pile, im RICH!
I don't know the laws on ANY of this stuff so this next comment may be totally off the wall but... does that hemp contain any of the good stuff in it? even residuals? If so, will you need any sort of license to stock pile it, or even have it? Honest officer those marijuana plants are for my chicken coop !! please get in the car, watch your head :)

There are chippers that cross shred, which might be able to take it down, there are others which are more grinder type, which may take it down. Or, maybe hemp is not that fibrous or it's different than palm fiber and does grind up fairly ok?

Id go and ask a few of them, hey why don't you do this and that with this? See what they have to say, might save a lot of wasted time if it turns out to be a real good reason.
