What did you do in the garden today?

Good afternoon all. It’s overcast and the wind comes and goes this afternoon. I tried out one of my new soaker hoses, holy cow! I love it, but it’s obvious I’m going to have to do something else to slow runoff regardless. I turned it on for half an hour and there was still water in the gutter when I turned it off :barnieSo, some progress but there’s more work to be done. I need to water some other things, but I’m holding off until I see what happens tomorrow. If we don’t get any rain I’ll have to do it myself. Blah. Fortunately hubs is off this weekend so he can help me with the new compost bin. I really want a three bin system so I can rotate…maybe. We’ll see.

Raised bed is empty and taken apart. The rain held off until about an hour ago so this morning I planted a few more starts in the ground - turnips, beets and a squash. Most of the fennel I transplanted survived, but I replaced one that didn't. The only garden I'm planting this year is now full.

@igorsMistress a pressure regulator before the soaker hose will help, mine was 25psi but I still could only turn it on for 10-15 minutes at a time.

I would have loved to have gotten my hands in the dirt today, but it barely got above freezing and that didn't happen until 4pm. Same for tomorrow. Another really cold night forecast: about 15 degrees. :barnie

I still have a lot of digging to do. The holes for the apple trees, and the rest of the new area for blueberry bushes.

My Egyptian Walking Onions are growing some greens. Despite being gnawed on by deer, despite teens at night. Those things must be pretty tough.

I am making last year's onions stretch out as far as I can. I admit, I've bought a couple bags at the store. I have some of the multiplier onions that are about 1.5" and maybe 4 of the decent sized Red Barons left from last year. The Red Barons are DH's favorite, so I've been saving them for the stuff he likes the best.

When all of them are gone, I'll be digging up some of the EWOs that grew outside the bed. They won't go very far, though, so I'll be buying onions again. I have 400 (!) sets coming next month. 200 Stuttgarter, and 200 Red Baron. Hopefully that will get us through next winter! :)

Could you cut the time in half while running the soaker hose and run twice a day? To give it longer to absorb. Or mulch over the hose so the mulch absorbs some of the run off?

Thanks vall I’ve been thinking about getting one. It’s that one bed that sucks for soil.

18 new detections/culls of HPAI flocks since Friday!!!

Gotta get the rest of the netting up to keep wild birds out of the run.

Very cold and windy these past few days. But, a warmup on Wed. Need to repot the Tomato starts- but they look great. Short but healthy and stout.
Are any of the new detections in new states? Or just in existing areas?

I have 9 - 10 tire planters to get filled with dirt so I can get my seed potatoes in the ground. Not looking forward to that one bit... I *might* be able to do some tomorrow evening if the rain holds off...

Looks like MN is the newest state impacted. They list first detections in one area of the APHIS site, and all detections in another area.

Satuday a family 2 hours north of me had their duck/chicken flock culled. 53 birds.

I really need to clean out the run, so I'll have to pick out a day with little wind, that cool, and lock the beasts in the coop and just let them hum at me while I open the run to rake it out and open the windows for fresh air.

You have to be so careful when you go out to feed them. They try to escape between your legs. They can see the green grass and want OUT. I also need to get some saddles. The rooster is entertaining himself. ARGH.
