What did you do in the garden today?

Morning all. Woke up yesterday on the edge of an anxiety attack so I had to reroute my brain. Drove to the next village for a trip to the tiny hardware and charity shop, the whole way wondering if panic would strike. UGH

Got my hardware, and found an amazing 82 year old cookbook, which is full of things I can't wait to try, and haven't heard of before! Brain was almost happy.

Panic crept in on the way home, but I dove into work and thwarted it, until dog triggered it at 5am today.
Grrrr.

Anyway, still only marigold seedlings. Ice on the ground with a dusting of the snow.
DS found me a thermometer set online that is wireless, and sends text messages to my phone for set temps, so one for the green house, one for the hoop, highs and lows, so I know to open and close things, or cover.

Horseradish starts have been shoved into starter.

I ordered 3 blueberry bushes, and they are here! Yay!

They are waaaay farther along than I thought they'd be; they have flowers! Yay?

It's still waaaay to cold to plant them. :barnie

So I'm going to pot them up and put them in the green house. My plan is to pot them in cardboard boxes. When it's warm enough to put them in the ground, I can cut slits in the boxes and take off any tape, then just plant the whole thing and water well.

Well... Woke up to snow today. Some would say a dusting, I would say about 1-2 inches. Enough to make me wonder if I'll lose the onions and potatoes I just put in... 🤦‍♀️ Anyway, at least I hadn't transplanted anything yet. And the chicky nuggets were all active and excited when I got out there this morning. I literally lay awake at night stressing that the electricity will go out and they will freeze.... Geeeeesh, this homesteading thing isn't for the faint of heart!!!
Coffee brewing, big girl panties on... Let's get this day going!!!!

Good morning gardeners. Welcome to the newcomers on the thread. I finally got post hole number three dug yesterday. I pretty much spent a couple of hours sitting / laying on the ground digging by hand because there were too many rocks for the post hole digger to cope with. I got 18 inches down and hit a large granite shelf. So, I trimmed 6 inches off the fence post and called it a day. We're getting a misty drizzle now with seasonal temps. I plan on spending a little time in the big garden today and removing the plastic cover from the chicken run. Tomorrow I have to drive to Boston so no work on the fence until Saturday. Only 2 more post holes to go. As far as I can tell the recent hard freeze the last few days has not destroyed any of the emerging plant life. My forsythia bush looks to be about ready to bloom and the daffodils, tulips and lilies of the valley are looking fine. The lilac and azalea are budding up as well. I haven't been able to spray my peach tree yet because it was either too windy or raining. Hopefully I can get that done tomorrow. So much to do and so little time. LOL!

I divided my coop when the chicks first moved out there, and gave them a space of their own. It was July by then, so plenty warm enough. I shut them in for about 4 days before I let them out into the divided run. They always knew where to go at night.

Raining and 50 right now. It'll be snowing by the end of the day! Really? Really?

It's still going to be upper 20s/low 30s for the next week or so. That'll keep the fruit bushes and trees from budding out too early.

Yeah, that was my positive spin on the weather.
These were hatched from the incubator in late January. I kept them in a brooder pen in the house for the first month due to weather and allowing them to feather out. In late February, I moved the brooder pen to an outdoor dog kennel. This allowed the adults to see but not touch and get everyone acquainted. So naturally they were roosting in the brooder in the dog kennel at night. After a week, I allowed them to intermingle with the adults. I would put them in the main coop at night because, naturally, they kept going back to the brooder. So I removed the brooder altogether thinking they would get the hint and go in the coop. Nope...they started using the roosts in the dog kennel instead. Understandable...so I took those down. Again, moving them manually every night into the coop. Then they started roosting on TOP of the dog kennel. Then on top of other things and other places.... Last night is the first time that they have FINALLY gone in the main coop on their own. Hallelujah!

I know you are supposed to remove the flowers for the first year or two. I did that on my previous blueberries and then they all died due to my ignorance in over-fertilizing. I have 2 new blueberry plants to get in the ground and they are all flowering like mad. I don't want to pull the flowers off.... 😢 Even though it's better to remove the flowers, I might just leave them on anyway.

I never got around to spraying my peach with the Dormant spray. Now its' blooming.... I'll have to look up what to spray it with while it's blooming. Time just flies before you know it....

Yes, same problem here not being able to get my peach trees sprayed. :barnie

The biggest reason I am building a fence is because the neighbor with the husky is a creep. He has a camera that looks into my backyard, he comes into my yard to spray "weeds," cut down flowers he doesn't like, and just to "check things out." I don't like this and he has been told off verbally.
This makes my stomach turn.... Blech. Just... why?!
