What did you do in the garden today?

HPAI now found in Ohio. It was only a matter of time since every state around Ohio has had detections. It was found in a backyard flock east of Columbus. Time to get the rest of the netting up to cover the rest of the run. But not happening until winds die down.
Hope all is well @Acre4Me. The most recent case in Massachusetts is way over near the New York state line. I’m only letting the chickens out for a few minutes when I clean their coop in the morning. I’m giving it a bit more time to see if there are anymore reports before letting them out for their usual time. I know they’re getting bored so I unwrapped the run today so they can at least have some visual stimulation. Fingers crossed this will be over soon.

Good afternoon gardeners. It has been a hectic week! We had some wind and light rain that didn’t amount to much. We’re having seasonal
temps the next few days but it’ll be in the mid 90s by this time next week, so I’ll be watering. A lot. I’m positive I have at least one rooster, possibly two, not at all thrilled but it is what it is I suppose. I thinned the borage to three per pot for now and will transplant into the garden in a couple more weeks. The tomatoes and other starts from the worm farm are still looking good, and the walking onions are about 4” tall now. I got some neem oil to try on the one blueberry bush to see if I can save it :fl I’m off to catch up, take care all.

Homemade grow tent is just about full.. all grown from seed by me

Another hours long gardening endeavor to plant the strawberry bare-roots. There were many happy weeds bc this bed had been covered by plastic. There were some bindweed roots. Added a lot of compost. The wind was blowing quite strongly and it was overcast and cold. It started to rain lightly as I was planting the bare-roots. But, now 50 bare-roots planted in the bed. Since temps are hovering around and below freezing tonight and tomorrow, I’ve covered them with a frost blanket.

The garlic from the spring shipped cloves has broken through and there are many garlic plants beginning to sprout. The other half of that bed has the garlic planted using bulblets. Nothing is poking through the ground there, but I dug up some small weeds and a couple of the bulblets came up too- one of them had a few tiny white roots beginning to grow, so I’m hopeful I’ll get something from them.

Next up: start to weed the big bed that we put goat poop onto last fall. The weeds with the big fat tap roots came from the goat poop, so I’ll be battling those this spring in all the beds.

Lethargic dog is spending the night at the vet, her bloodwork is all over the place. They're going to do an ultrasound of her gut tomorrow. If there is a mass there it would explain why she's been on a strict prescription diet for 18 months and only loosed weight for the first 5 months and then started gaining it again. 12 pounds since august and we've dieted her and exercised her like crazy. She has bursts of energy, but this past week has been a sleep fest.

So some gut stuff is treatable, some is not. We shall see.
We all agreed at home that meds are ok, but we know somethings are not fixable, and that if the worst comes, it comes.
A rescue dog is a mystery. I know they abused and overfed her, and fed her junk foods of all kinds.
Sigh....so we shall see.

OH and while I was waiting on the vet, I hung out in town..saw these at TSC - got one, yup.

I've had a very crappy day.

1. Dog chewed up and busted my brand new glasses. When I went to take them away from her, she growled and snapped at me at least 3 times. I know she's just scared because she knew I was angry but this is not the first time she has misbehaved this way. Those glasses cost $200 WITH insurance. Insurance only covers frames once every 2 years which means not only is that $200 down the drain, God knows how much I'm going to have to pay for new ones.

2. My temperamental cat peed on a quilt in our living room right in front of me. She does this occasionally, usually when she's mad about something. She knew the minute I looked at her that she was in trouble. I didn't even say a word and she took off like she was launched out of a rocket. DH wants me to put her down when she does this but. I just really didn't need this today. Quilt is currently in the washer along with TWO dog beds that she also peed on.

3. Walked outside to go start another bucket of fermented feed (it's Day 2) only to discover my little greenhouse got picked up by the wind and tossed. I had 9 broccoli starts, two pineapple tops, some sweet Basil, 3 rosemary pots I recently seeded, and 2 flats I seeded with marigold seed... All douched on the ground.

I think I salvaged most of it EXCEPT the rosemary and marigolds. Probably have to start from scratch on all those... I found several seedlings in the dirt that looked like they had juuuust about been ready to break the surface. No idea what they were. I put what I could back in dirt but I don't have high hopes.

Today was a sucky day and it's not over yet.
