What did you do in the garden today?

I have a pound each of sets for those to put in. I'm thinking about planting some now (this week, anyway) and some at a later date.

My Egyptian Walking Onions have regrown greens, from where the deer browsed them down to the ground. I fixed the garden fence, so hopefully, they keep the bleep out of my garden! When we run out of onions, I'll be digging some EWOs up. There are some that walked out of the bed, so they can be harvested.

Garlic is up as well.

We have another day and a half of nice, and then the bottom falls out. The temps crash, the storms roll in, and we have 5-6 nights of around to slightly below freezing. At least all the buds on the fruit trees are still tight and no flowers out yet.
I have onions & shallots to put in today also. The rain is actually supposed to stop for 24 hours starting around 10, so I’m going to take advantage!

I have some walking onion seeds to plant, not sure if it is too early yet or not?
I think you can pretty much put them in any time. I believe generally they need a fall planting to harvest the following year so you probably won't get much from them this year - but they will grow any time you plant them. At least that's my understanding, I think @Sally PB is a bit more of an expert tho! I stuck my bulbs in the ground a couple/few weeks ago & the greens are a couple inches tall.

Well, I'm not an expert, I just have had Egyptian Walking Onions for 3 years, and they're doing very well. They seem to be VERY hardy.

They're "supposed" to be planted in the fall, but I bet if you planted them now, they'd grow just fine. You can probably get some green onions (the top) in a few weeks, but trim them thinly and sparingly, as that's the part of the plant feeding the bulb below.

You might get some stalks with topsets (the little onion things that you can plant for more plants), but don't be surprised if you don't. If you do, let them mature till the stalk dries, then separate them and plant them in the fall to get more EWOs next year.

EOWs are like asparagus... patience for a couple seasons, so they get established, then they will take off.

Had a bit of a rainy spell and %$#QT FROST again last night, WTF it's FLORIDA dammit !!!
I put space heaters out so the papaya / banana / coffee plant etc etc didn't get bit and they are no worse for it, thank god it was a little frost.

The garlic, it's into the scrape phase now where it sends up what I believe would be it's flower, you snip that off (they are absolutely delicious btw) so the plant concentrates on growing the bulb. This garlic went absolutely crazy, the tops are getting like branches on it's its so insane !! Last year this time they all rotted off because of the wet and me planting them wrong, so the fact that I made it this far, I count as a success so far !!

Now to wait for it to ripen and harvest. I'll see if I can push it to fall. I had two bulbs from years past that I totally ignored, they actually grew for about 2 straight years before finally giving up the ghost. Won't do that with these but hoping I get a good haul out of them.

The scrapes, I cut into diced pieces and add that to any dish that asks for garlic. OMG is it good, I chewed one too, umm . IT was mild but vampire breath all night and the next morning heh

Been pouring down all night hard...yesterday wasn't this heavy a rains. Got another day of this I'm afraid and I have 13 babies in lockdown and lights just flickered! Ugh
Between the fragile kale I planted and all the seeds I'm not sure the straw will be able to save em from this heavy and long a rains!
How on earth did people survive back then when they didn't have grocery stores with as much food available as we do currently?
Foraging and hunting. Eating seasonally and hoping for the best.

Scapes are Excellent! Very strange about that frost. We didnt even get one up here in Ny. Might trade you? Will take the frost if you take the heavy rain?

Thanks for asking. No, no tetanus though I probably should have. My last one was fall 2020 so technically upto date. It took acouple weeks to heal, bad location, and has left me with a dime sized ball of scar tissue under the skin. Fun times.
I believe a Tetanus booster lasts 10 years?
Horse crap is a bad carrier of Tetanus, but otherwise nails and stuff, hard to say. It's better safe than sorry though, as that is one disease you don't want to play with. There is no real cure for it, if you get it it has to run it's course which can be several weeks of misery.

Had a friend in the navy get it and you don't even want to know... its a bad thing to get.

I think its 5yrs but after an "event" you should get a booster. As a kid I got them yearly because walking around barefoot in the garage and woods is soo very smart.
