What did you do in the garden today?

I'll meet your Ohio (I grew up there), and raise you Nebraska, where we have all the joys of an Ohio Spring with the addition of wildfires, BIG wildfires.
Nope after cali and Wisconsin I will stick with Ohio. Unless I hit the lottery of course. No fires anymore hopefully. Nebraska is beautiful you got me there for sure.

Grey all day yesterday. It snowed…quite heavy in the morning, particularly to the west. Records were broken…2-2.5 inches of snow in the general area yesterday. Finally saw sone sun as the sun was setting.

Today: cold. Might get to 44F 🙄. Looks like it won’t rain, but there is a 25% chance, so who knows.

Maybe today -but tomorrow-for sure- I’ll up-pot my tomatoes and peppers.

Carrots: @riss @chickengr I’ve never started them in pots! I’ve only direct seeded. I’ve heard that for many root veg it can mess with root formation when they are transplanted.

I also started putting down cardboard in the garden as a weed stop. For those of you who have used this method, what do you use to tack it down so it doesn't blow away? I'm currently using landscaping pins but I can easily see those will disintegrate or simply tear through the cardboard eventually.

I have mulch on top of mine.
I covered my sheets of cardboard with a heavy coating of leaves. I did this in the fall, if at all possible. The snow would weigh everything down and compress it. Then in the spring, I'd uncover the areas that were to be planted so that the soil could warm up.

I did this in my squash bed, a big flat area. It really helped keep the weed down, and improved the soil too. It's very sandy soil, and I never used to find worms there. I do now.:)

Fair warning... I find slugs there now too. :(

Gonna say nothing is getting done in the garden for the next few days. Was going to take some pics and grab some opinions on how best to do the potato bed but . . . well . . . .

20220419_061034.jpg 6-8" of the HEAVY white stuff. Trees down all over and the power is out. Easter chicks have a quart mason jar full of hot water stuffed in a wool sock, with a towel drapped over.
Had to wait for the plow to come through and shove trees out of the way before I could make it off the hill to head to work.

Edit: tried to fix spacing

Here’s my yard this morning.

The small back tree has a branch that snapped right off. The front tree with the sagging branch is usually high enough to walk under.

Today was the day I was setting my eggs at school. 😞 No school today due to weather. Cmon, it’s the middle of April. When is it gonna end? 🙄

Tried cardboard once too. Great for weeds. Tons of slugs like Sally warned. Now I just weed by hand. No straw, no cardboard, no mulch. I rather pull weeds than pluck slugs. Lol. And hoping the chickens will help with weeding next spring!

Yeah, really!

We're supposed to get a few nice days, but the middle of next week could be another big cool down. There's supposed to be waaay below average temps in the Great Lakes area through the end of April, beginning of May.

I didnt grab a pic byt there was a 6" main leader from a tree hanging by a hair infront of my coop run door. Chickens are staying Locked in until that comes down. Will probably rope it and pull it off when I get home.

Will the day late egg start mess up any scheduled plans with the kiddos?

I buy the carrot transplants - they are cheap. when I divide them they remain straight.

I don't know why but this thread keeps untagging / un notifying me for some reason, I hate it.
snipping more scrapes off garlic and watching the winter peas take off looking for places to dangle off. I really need to plant my peppers and stuff but well yes they are late but since we are late season i still got time.
