What did you do in the garden today?

I don't know why but this thread keeps untagging / un notifying me for some reason, I hate it.
snipping more scrapes off garlic and watching the winter peas take off looking for places to dangle off. I really need to plant my peppers and stuff but well yes they are late but since we are late season i still got time.

To add to the carrot discussion…I have never started them indoors. I always direct seed. If you keep them moist (lightly water multiple times per day), the germinate pretty easily. I was gifted seed tape once and that was even easier! My indoor tray space is limited so beets, carrots, peas, beans all get direct seeded.

Will the day late egg start mess up any scheduled plans with the kiddos?
Just pushing our hatch date back one day. Not a huge deal, but I’m impatient and I’m sure they are too! Lol

carrots, I have bought baby carrots from the stores, the organic ones in the baggies, and planted them, they grow, and at the end of the season, you have a not so baby carrot, and if you want you can let a few seed. Not the most eco way but you can get seeds for next season. being organic they can't nuke them so they should be viable offspring.

Cool & rainy here but I'm SO thankful it's not snow! I feel for you guys.

Got a bunch of cosmos seeds I saved from last year put out yesterday. My bean seeds are starting to pop under the plexiglass cover. Just have to wait till the middle of May to really start planting.

The weather is kind of odd here too. Going to get in the 40's again tonight. Some people would say YAY heat wave !! In Florida that's more of an, umm It's APRIL already, what's up with this?? As long as the frost is over for the year, im good with it all. Well NO hurricanes either

Seems like most everyone uses mulch over their cardboard. I did that last year on top of the feed bags I used. The problem I ran into was that squash bugs LOVE wood chip mulch. I'm not relishing dealing with that again. I want to try something different... Thinking of maybe using straw? I have plenty of leaves but I would think it would cause similar problems as the mulch.

Too bad there isn't a bug repellent mulch that is a natural organic product... :he

ETA - Anyone ever used cypress or cedar mulch in their garden?

I picked a bunch of Rattlesnake green beans and Cherokee wax beans, a few tomatoes, three eggplants, some broccoli shoots, and jalapenos. Pretty happy with today's harvest!

I built a 10 foot tall tomato cage out of concrete reinforcing wire, may need a ladder to harvest!

So here's what I'm thinking.... I may use a combination of different types of mulch. I'm thinking cedar mulch around the perimeter to discourage snails and slugs. Potentially straw or grass clippings in the middle outside the hoop house. Then maybe grass clippings, sawdust, or leaves inside the hoop house? I have squash, tomatoes, carrots, eggplant, and corn growing inside the hoop house. I have brassicas and lettuce growing outside the hoop house.
