What did you do in the garden today?

Better than where I am in Florida, where the water table is sometimes literally a few feet under the surface. At least you can use dynamite to solve your problem. Im pretty screwed and the whole root cellar / basement thing is only a pipe dream at this point :)

you can use a dynamite and make a swimming pool :lau

I have grown yellow squash and zucchini into a single stalk 4 ft tall “tree”.. my granny (great grandmother) used to do this and other old Indian tricks in the garden, but this one I remember (I was just a small boy last I’d gardened with her) and have repeated this over the years with great success.. you must support it from early on, and when it flowers (2 at a time) it puts off 2 more stalks/stems/branches (don’t really know the term for squash branches), when you take the fruit (2) you take off bottom 2 stalks/stems/branches, it just continues to stack on top of each other growing up as it goes.. it’s really neat to see and it keeps air circulating and bugs at bay..
OMG I so love this idea! I'm going to try it. I love bush squash, it works better in a smaller space & I think I still have some seeds. My issue with the bush squash is powdery mildew & then squash bugs & this sounds like it might help with both.

I was going to try it, but I found a web page on string training, and I will NEVER GROW TOMATOES ANY OTHER WAY. Two years of ginormous plants that go on and on without getting tangled.
How many tomatoes do you get from a plant when you do it this way? More, fewer? A neighbor told me she figures she gets enough for a quart (for canning) from each plant, plus fresh eating.
I still plan to make that Mock Apple Pie with Ritz crackers some day!
I remember that! I wondered what it actually tasted like.

YAY! I love a happy ending. I don't know about you but when I figure out a problem and make it good, I feel like a genius. :)

* Yes I love a happy ending too, but don't feel like a genius, in this case, it's more a beat myself up. Ive been an engineer for 40 plus years, and when something 'simple' after the root cause failure analysis of it slaps you in the face gets you, it's like, well ok dumbass, YOU should have figured that one out half a day ago. Maybe with 45 years of experience, I won't let this ever get me again :D

It's all good though. Now to move it where I need it / can figure a place to cram it, and sort thru my freezin's to see what goes where.

I still want my walkin though!

Happy Rapunzel Tomato in a 5 gallon GrowBag.. I need to pinch suckers and flowers on my container maters.. I’ll let suckers get a bit longer on a few varieties I want to root and grow more of, I’ve been out in the big garden plot with the “in ground” plants.. there’s just not nearly enough hours in the day and definitely not enough bend in my back.. lol.. slow and steady wins the race, or so they say. Have a great day everybody !! DB9A3289-580B-4BAF-A600-2E4DB3856AE9.png

So cold. Windy, then rainy. Yesterday, last night and today. Overcast grey skies right now - might get some clearing later today.

Peach trees arrived. The end was crushed- clearly, based on the large and obvious boot print, someone from UPS tried to use it as a step stool. it was on the end with the branches, not the roots, and only one small tertiary branch got broken. But, considering shipping was over $50 and the box is clearly labeled plants ….you’d think they could refrain from crushing this particular box. 🙄🙄🙄

Now, I’m off to drive to pick up chicks. 20 males, 4 females of White Plymouth Rocks. Asked for any extra Dorkings or Speckled Sussex if they have them, but not expecting it bc they were sold out and they have limited numbers of them. These males will be grown to 16 weeks, then butchered for meat.
