What did you do in the garden today?

* Yes I love a happy ending too, but don't feel like a genius, in this case, it's more a beat myself up. Ive been an engineer for 40 plus years, and when something 'simple' after the root cause failure analysis of it slaps you in the face gets you, it's like, well ok dumbass, YOU should have figured that one out half a day ago. Maybe with 45 years of experience, I won't let this ever get me again :D
My old brain isn't what it used to be so while I get those - I should have known better - incidents, I am so happy I managed to "fix" the problem, I still get a rush. :)
Can I plant these around the chicken run or are they poisonous to chickens?
Sweet Peas
@WthrLady beat me to it, but sweet peas are toxic to chickens and rabbits. It makes no sense to me, regular pea vines are loved by our rabbits and the young growing tips are said to be very tasty in stir fry.
I seem to have the same luck... I've saved a handful of chicks from certain death and nearly ALL of them ended up being roosters.

Speaking of the little ankle-pecker....she (cause I'm optimistic like you....) is trying to help me type out this message....lol
One of our layers, Inky, nearly died as a chick to overheating (I will never use heat lamps again). As a hen, she was nearly carried off by a hawk. She's alive and well and the prettiest coal black Australorp and lays lovely pinkish eggs.

More storms expected but it's been nice this morning. It makes for a much more pleasant critter care and dog walk.

Got the chicks!

24 White Plymouth Rocks (20 male, 4 female-these have a red dot)

AAND..

6 Red Dorkings! They had some extra so I said I’d take 6! These are straight Run- they don’t sex their exhibition lines. We had some a few years ago and liked them- very pretty males that are a bit talkative but nice !

jerryse, Good luck with your A-Fib. I dealt with it for about 10 yrs with meds. Kept having to get stronger and stronger dosages of the meds, Then tronger meds then stronger dosages of those meds. Finally got an ablation and have been A-fib free since 2014 with no meda. But... I started having high blood pressure soon after, which I had not had before. Traded one malady for another I guess. The blood pressure is easier to control for me though.

Surgeries are scary things, but fortunately with technology, what was a HUGE deal a decade ago, is pretty much an out patient surgery today. Heart bypass, when they first started was month or more in the hospital. Now it's pretty much out patient. Spinal Fusions, same thing. Might want to seriously look into the surgery if it may help and be done with that crap once and for all. I have a few friends who had heart issues, went in for various surgeries and never felt better afterwards they say. in fact they were mad at themselves for waiting so long to get the surgery.

Good luck with whatever you choose, but know that procedures are amazing today and it's not that huge risk it was even a few years ago.

Good grief I am sick of high winds. What started out as a really nice day turned into Chicago weather. I did get the bags of dirt out of my car and into the new garden bed. I have some extra dirt in containers that I can add to it. I had planned on cleaning the leaves off the 16 foot raised bed but the wind kept getting stronger. I finally got the fig tree out of the garage, watered and fertilized. It looks good and looking like leaves are forming. More onion starts and asparagus popping up through the soil. I'm hoping with warming temperatures the asparagus will do even better. I uncovered the plastic from the kale and carrot seeds I planted last week. My apple trees are developing leaves and the peach tree is taking it's time to bloom, thank goodness. I have daffodils blooming and tulips, daylilies, and lilies of the valley coming up and my purple azalea, fritallaria and lilac are getting ready to burst. Spring is finally here. The downside is the grass is starting to grow. I'm thoroughly happy that the quick dip in early morning temps did not damage anything. Fingers crossed that's the last of it for the season.

Snow melted enough to go grab a few pics. Lines are added to show slope. This is the only place I have to put a new Potato bed. Planning on 8-10 rows/terraces 12-14ft long.

And with lines showing slope.

Soil is straight clay.
I want to take up the sod layer, and then build the rows ontop of the clay as is. Have plenty of rabbit, chicken and free horse manure. Was going to scavenge some old rotted mulch hay to top it all.
My Dad wants to get the tractor and level the patch off. I'm worried about too much washout with the rains and having to build a retaining wall at the bottom.
Any Ideas?
