What did you do in the garden today?

Good morning gardeners. I must have heard the girl at the worm farm incorrectly. From the reading I’ve been doing the way to dwarf a mulberry is to grow in a pot or trim it. Works for me so we’re going to give it a try. We lived at a house with mulberry trees and they were huge, don’t want anything that big here. So trees we’ve settle on are plum, apricot, bananas and apples. We eat these fruits regularly and a mulberry would be nice too if I can find it. I’m going to plant the trees outside my full sun garden with the tallest growing to the west of the others. The two vitex will also go in the ground. The one with multiple trunks I’m going to plant about six feet from the house where it will provide late afternoon shade on the arcadia door. The other I haven’t decided yet but I may put it out near the garden for late afternoon shade. That will block that damn google grom looking into my yard for their street views in maps. I really dislike that people can see into my yard on that thing. I live in a house with a privacy wall on purpose, jerks. Anyway, I need to get dressed and run to Home Depot to see what fruit trees they have there. Hqve a great day all!

Mulberry takes a long time to get huge and they are very receptive to strategic pruning.. it is very easy to keep a “mulberry bush” manageable, either let it grow into a tree or use drastic pruning, a decent 3-4 inch stump will send off shoots that in just a year or 2s time will produce many berries.. they are very susceptible to a form of mildew, in damp/overly wet spots they do not thrive, I am dealing with the loss of many mulberry trees behind my house from a water leak.. I had to remove a 10 inch diameter tree and still am dealing with the stump (water leak is under the stump)... not an easy fix for me as I have limited mobility and its 2 years now and the stump still has a toe holt, but there’s electric water supply (leaking) and drains from house in this same area.. but under controlled conditions mulberry is a very workable and productive tree to have.. just my observations with them over the years..

Morning everyone. Happy May Day!
Must water everything as I skipped yesterday and the sun is blazing through the greenhouse tops.
I'm also going to fire up the, gasp, lawn mower and trim this place up. The grasses have burst into green the past 5 days with several rounds of nitrogen rich rain and my load of manure and chemicals (only limestone and nitrogen pellets, no weed killers).
Rain every day this week on and off, so I'd rather get it done when the winder is a little wider open than just a couple hours here or there.
I made 4 bee traps last week and bought a couple of jars at the charity shop last night to make 2 more. I'll hang 2, and put the rest away for replacements or neighbors (no they don't catch neighbors)
Worked on a dress yesterday until hand told me to quit trying to grab tiny pins. So frustrating.
OH the sweet potatoes don't have slips on them, but do have roots started, so I'm just going to go ahead and shove them in their container pots and water them. Here's hoping for the best.

Yesterday morning I went for a walk to see what all was growing before I mowed.. not a lot to speak of, honeysuckle is just starting to bloom, wild roses are going crazy in the creek bottoms smell really good.. grapes are really growing after the deep freeze 2 years ago burnt all the vines to the ground, dewberries are just starting to get ripe and I never make it back to the house with any at this point.. I eat em all.. mulberry trees are full of juvenile berries and looks like will be plentiful this year, found a new patch of nettles, poke, wild plantain, cleavers, wood sorrel, a few new sassafras trees, dock, lambs ear, lamb quarter, milkweed and some more stuff.. I was mostly looking for oysters and puffballs.. two of my favorite edible “mushrooms” that grow on my place.

Managed to get my tomatoes outside today in some morning sun. Looking to hit 60-70°for highs today. Will be out of town for a graduation so made sure they are in a spot that only gets am sun. Hopefully they will perk up a little. Havent been happy in the house.

I don't know your age/generation, but did you ever hear about the tornado in North Texas (Wichta Falls) called "Terrible Tuesday"--April 10th, 1979? We were in our house & it hit us. Hid under a mattress next to mom & dad's bed, and nothing left of the roof when it was over. Mom's Ford LTD was in the kitchen, and dad's Ranchero pickup was upside down on top of it. Moms played cards in the kitchens, kids ran around insane from the barometric pressure, and dads drank beer in the back yard and kept an eye on the clouds.

Oh yes. I am quite old enough to VIVIDLY remember that one.
I remember the 1974 super outbreak too. That one got us.
Also the night of the twisters in Grand Island, where 7 tornadoes hit in an around the town.

Ah the watch parties. LOL. Yes, I remember those, days before cable tv. The radio in the corner of the garage constantly on as well as the charcoal grill going. YEP.

Thanks Flint! We really don’t have to worry about too much water here typically. Unless it was a leak as in your case and I’m not sure we have water pipes in the backyard. I had to order the mulberries but that’s ok.

Went to HD and all they had was lemongrass, no plums or apricots. Went to Lowes and scored though! Got two plum trees and two apricots. All are dwarf varieties getting up to six feet tall. I think these will go nicely around the garden. The apricots will likely go on the west side and the plums on the south side with apples. I checked the varieties I got to make sure they’re for my zone.

Planted 3 more 72 flats but had to leave them in the greenhouse -- seed start media had a big spider and couple of other creepy crawlies that I don't want in the house. Total of 6 flats started now.

Also picked up 3 bundles of lightly used 3.5 gallon plastic grow bags from my neighbor for cheap ~240 for $15. I can fill in the rest of my greenhouse without the cost of building our standard raised beds!
