What did you do in the garden today?

Rained today, we even had done thunder! No gardening today.

Have chauffeur duties still- four more weeks till spouse is allowed to drive. So, my day is broken up by the morning/evening commutes to drop off pick up nearly an hour away. Sage advice: if you break your leg/ankle/foot then break your LEFT one, not your right.

Guerneys order: still sitting 25 miles away: distance moved via tracking: zero. I’m *so glad* they packed up my plants into a dark, closed up box for the entire weekend…it makes complete sense to do this with LIVING plants 🙄🙄🙄.

Picked up the 1/4 cow today-all frozen- now the small chest freezer is full again with the last few meat chickens and todays beef pickup. There was a sale on smoked ham hocks, so I pressure cooked 8C of homegrown dried beans and ham hocks. Looking forward to growing more dried beans this year!

Tonight, more storms and rain.

Mine didn’t do great in those conditions

Farmers are planting soybeans and apple blossoms are opening . Think I will plant beans tomorrow if the soil is dry enough . We have had a lot of little rain showers this week but no large amounts . FYI you can plant dry beans from the grocery store . Much cheaper seed . I am doing blackeyed peas and pinto beans this way this year .
That's where I get my navy beans.

When I was a kid, my job upon getting home from school was to make a pot of boiled coffee on the stove and it always smelled soooo good but tasted awful to me. I started drinking coffee when I got my first serious job in my 20s. I'd mix a cup of coffee with a cup of coco. Now I can drink it hot, iced, with or without cream, nearly anyway it is offered to me. And probably too much of it too.

Oh I am keeping that expression! The perfect description.

I know and I just love it! But rabbit poop is just the best thing isn't it? Usable strait out of the bunny with no danger of burning plants or salmonella. We use the urine too, just water it down.

I do but mine is just a few 5 gallon buckets of foliage (borage & comfrey usually) left to age a couple of weeks, strained, then mixed one part tea with ten parts water. Smells terrible but we use it on everything from seedlings to newly planted trees and shrubs.

That's about my watering schedule for the summer and a dry fall. Partly why I love checking in here, so many different climates to learn abour.

 Rhubarb bolts???? I've only grown it myself for a few years but we always had it in my parents' garden and I don't ever remember it flowering.

Okay that picture was terrifying!:thDoes it look like that often? And those are amazing petunias, such a striking color!

In the greenhouse the San Marzano, Early Cherry, and Firecracker (determinant) tomatoes have sprouted. And so have the zucchini but none of the peppers nor cucumbers. I've been late to get the greenhouse going this year but now that I have, the little sprouts make my heart happy. It's blustery with blowing rain today so not anything more than critter care and watering the greenhouse got done today. I did get another seed tray filled with soil and soaking to be planted tomorrow. Probably more tomatoes, peppers, and some flowers. I love having flowers sprinkled in with the vegetables and it really helps bring in the bees.

The chicks in my bathtub are coming along, but I'll have to put some sort of walls up to keep them in there soon. We candled the eggs in the incubator and all 12 look like they are all developing at the same rate.
Yes, this is a frequent view in the Prairielands.

Ugh, we need rain. It was supposed to rain today and didn't except for a few sprinkles that effectively did nothing for the garden...

I did manage to get the new raspberry bed in place and filled with soil. Got 5 new canes in the ground. Double Gold from Stark Brothers, I think. Btw, apparently the grubs *really* love my rabbit compost pile. I probably picked 20-30 giant, fat grubs out of the soil I put in the wagon for the new beds. The chickens and ducks got quite a treat today! I've had them penned up for nearly 2 weeks while I was trying to reseed some bare spots around the barn. Does look like it's working so I'm wondering if the seed was bad. 🤔

DH and I have spent most of the day working on this triple, raised bed unit. I've got plastic lattice that will arch between each bed. Going to use it for my runner beans, butterfly peas, and maybe put my pineapple mint in the center. Going to have to dismantle a few more pallets to get it finished though.... 😒

BTW, except for the 2 8' pieces of 2x4 along with bottom, every single piece of wood in this bed is salvaged or scrap.

Haven't done a whole lot in the garden the past few days. We had 1 1/2" of rain Monday night, the most we have had in the past 1 1/2 months. Have added a layer of leaf mulch in the past few weeks to help conserve the water I'm puttin on the ground. Yesterday I went to water, figurin it may needed it but found there was still moisture there. Watered a little bit anyway.
Today I broke up row where the winter peas were, and will get some seed tomorrow for another couple rows of corn for Mrs Lobo.
Still waitin for the onions. Being impatient here but got to thinkin about past years when I dug onions in May, so Maybe I'm on schedule anyway!
Ube is coming up through its winter mulch and lookin like it will be another bumper crop sometime early next winter.
Got some alfalfa seed the other day from Hancock seed and even though they said they needed the average soil temp. to be <65 F (didn't test ) I planted some anyway. It's up about an inch in just a few days. Gotta keep it watered though as it is so thick I can't mulch it. It has a deep root system so maybe It will not need too much water throughout the summer. Have just planted just a few small spots though as an experiment. An excellent soil builder, so I've heard.
Planted blackeye peas last year as a cover drop but the leaf footed stink bugs took over the patch and I hate those d###ed bugs. Don't think I will be doing that again!
Anyway, I'm on schedule for a decent crop this year in spite of the weather (rain) not being very co-operative.
Happy gardening folks!
