What did you do in the garden today?

We planted beans this time but seeds đŸ™ˆ mr muddy wanted Kentucky pole beans but im not sure that’s the seeds he found :th
Hopefully he got the right ones! I’ve realized, too late, that I bought leaf lettuce on accident. Not going to work in a hydroponic garden :gig

We had to do mixed lettuce based on availability…..no color…..but we have lots of green. Some head lettuce, romaine , butter crunch and spinach

I noticed some tomato sprouts coming up! They were from seeds someone gave us that expired in 2017. I didn't think anything would happen. But I think they're Brandywine. Score!

This year I'm overwhelmed with two little kids and setting up our new house/property for the first time. So I planted some seeds in the front and side flowerbeds. Then I scattered some in some bald spots in the backyard, stepped on them, and scattered a bucket of ashes on top.

I got a few tomato and hot pepper plants from Rural King and already broke one in half before I could get it in the ground. My kids and I all have a stomach flu. So I did things veeeery slowly and veeerly carefully the last few days.

Could not stop my 3 yr old from sticking all the oakra in the ground....somewhere I don't know where.

The previous day I planted some zucchini, yellow crook necked squash, and eggplants. I hope eggplants don't mind sharing flowerbeds with roses. :p I scattered three packets of sage around. I popped a few blueberry seeds into some peatmoss in a pot.

There are some mystery sprouts coming up in one of the beds. I suspect they are pumpkin volunteers from last Halloween's decorations. If so, I gotta move'm before they get big and kill everything else.

Afternoon all, we’re finally home. It’s warm outside and the breeze is picking up. I’m so happy we went to the farm today. It gave me a ton of ideas and we’re planning to add a few more fruit trees. Plans right now are an apricot and a plum, maybe a dwarf mulberry. The apples they grow are espaliered and many have golf ball sized apples already. I bought another tomato plant, a jalapeño, and two sugarcane starts today. Time to research sugar cane, enjoy your afternoon!

Does anyone know how corn does in clay? I grew it last year in one of my upper raised beds, but thinking of planting it at the bottom this year. It'd be downhill at the base of my garden. Too much rain and it gets a little swampy.
Mine didn’t do great in those conditions

I am *not* an expert, but

1. I think corn likes a little less water than most people think.

2. I think clay soil can work ok as long as your ph is right and you have enough organic matter and fertilize it some.

All we have is red clay here and it does fine. I dunno about swampy though. You could try celery or bamboo or something that likes the wet?

If you try corn anyway, we plant ours in mounds, Indian style. You make a mound of clay, stick your finger in the middle and put in the corn with some fertilizer. Then you plant squash around the base.
