What did you do in the garden today?

I mowed the slope on the south side of my house, then mowed along the fence line of the chicken yard. I use the electric mower for these smaller areas. I was going to run the big riding mower over the front yard but with the gas prices just under $5 a gallon locally, I think I can let that go for a few more days. I went through old photos of my vegetable gardens and this year things are pretty much on track as they were the past several years. Next week temps will be warming to upper 70’s and low 80’s. Perfect for growing. I have one tomatillo plant that is perking up. So happy to see that. Did more weeding this morning. That’s about all for now. Quick note, my second planting of carrots are coming up. Need to plant more.

My flock likes the cubes for water and blocks to stand on lol. They really are adorable when they first check it out!
I've tried putting a small baby pool with ice water in our chicken run. Chickens won't get in it at all...even if it is only an inch deep. They will drink out of it once the ice is gone.

I cut doors in the pool but left a lip on the bottom and put only a block of ice in it. The ice slowly melts. They like to stand on it and also sip the cool water when it melts.

Galanga grow and look like ginger, but they say it taste different. I haven't tasted it yet....... :)

You can use a flowering type fertilizer to stimulate your trees to bear fruit. I use a little 10-30-10 or 10-20-20 monthly around the drip line to support fruiting. If you fertilize next to the stem, their leaves will burn.
What I'm wondering really is if the plants will survive. I know they have hollow trunks and I'm wondering what's going to happen when that dead tip falls off.
Think I'll leave those to grow just to see what happens, but plant new ones. Pretty sure my male died too.
Good looking corn and papaya😍

Put in 30 beautiful sweet potato slips from baker creek. Heirloom cultivar - 'sweet pumpkin'. Not been around much since the 1860s.
4 foot fencing around the bed bc my girls loooove greens.
My seedlings are sprouting. Rampicate, delicata, lemon and sicilia squashes. Arugala. Punkins! And an experimental multicolor kale/grex seed i got from a seed breeder.

Finally got our posts in and 6 foot fence up around the garden!

:wee

We went with 2x4 welded wire. The gate is not done yet but finally removed the makeshift materials blocking bunnies & dogs! Thinking I will need to add 2ft of chicken wire or plastic mesh at the bottom to ensure the bunnies can’t squeeze through. But I’ll wait and see before taking the time to put it all on.

Going out to put some more pole beans in the pea patch that got eaten by the rabbit. Was going to put the winter squash in but I think I’ll wait til the morning.

Busy morning into the afternoon. The second big bed is now mostly planted. It is approx 20’x30’.

There are melons and pumpkins on 2 outer edges. Then squash on a third edge (summer squash). In the middle we erected 4 cattle panels, about 6’ apart. They run N/S. This gave me 8 sides to plant viney stuff, so planted cucumbers (4 kinds, including Suyo Long that others here have mentioned and 2 types that produce only female flowers so do not need pollinators - I’ll guess created for greenhouse growers). And some patty pan squash (2 kinds), a vining summer squash, so that will be interesting. Also 1 cushaw type squash and 3 kinds of butternut type of squash. We finished with planting some fennel in the same bed. We ended with laying on straw then turning on the sprinkler.

Supposed to get rain tonight/tomorrow morning, but isn’t expected to be very much, so that is why we watered this afternoon.

Chicken and dumplings just about done on the stove for lunch. It's been raining pretty steadily so not much has gotten done in the garden. I'll try to get a few more peppers moved out of the greenhouse and make more space for the tomatoes. The borage and comfrey have gone crazy but I might just dig them under instead of making compost tea out of them. Perfect idea for a lazy gardener. :)
