What did you do in the garden today?

Dug more into the Kansas cattle die off. Mostly feedlots. And the blame is being put on the swing from normal temps to abnormally high temps too quickly. BS
This happens every years about now, maybe a week or two off, but that's not drastic. Individual ranches are required to report deaths, but company lot deaths have to be reported. These are high stress areas to start with. Feed lot cattle MUST be checked multiple times a day for water, heat, feed, and trouble. THey are huge open pens with hundreds of animals in each. Things can go wrong quickly.
I don't know the Kansas laws, but stock welfare is HUGE in Nebraska.

Hosed off the alpacas.
I has my alpacas sheared a couple of weeks ago. The shearer mentioned that one shouldn't hose off the entire animal, only the chest and underside. I don't know why though. Mine like to wade in the pond up to their bellies, it doesn't have to be hot for them to do it. Don't understand that either.

Alpacas are goobers that's why.
Only their legs and bellies because if you get the top of them wet, it's like them wearing a wet sweater in the blazing sunshine. They don't cool down, they heat up. They actually shed water when it rains.
They stand in water to cool off when they want to. Major arteries run across their bellies and legs near the surface and cooling that off cools their whole bodies.
I have three that love to have their tails soaked and, ah hem, boy bits half frozen with the well water. Then they use their wet tails like puffs to keep cooling their gym equipment. LOL

Anyone else feeling unmotivated to do anything today?
Yes. Me. I watered the gardens this morning before it got too hot. Took two hours. Sweaty, hounded by deer flies. After I did the shopping, I just went back to bed.
Looks like someone had a few too many when that was put up!
It sure does, doesn't it? :lau

Almost that time.... Now IF ONLY these came from the thornless variety... 🙄

I love all of those ideas!

In California .., the state doesn’t allow water collection as far as I know, or didn’t when we were there, which is pretty ballsy if you ask me. If I pay to use the land, the water on it should be mine. Why let it just flow away into the gutter and down the street?!
They do now. There is actually a rebate for installing rain barrels, but your whole house had to have gutters and mine was only half done so I used trash cans instead of the $$ barrels with a spigot.

Well, that was fast. Only 4 days after planting seeds the pumpkins are coming up already.

And just about everywhere I look there's a melon of one variety or another.
