What did you do in the garden today?

I dug a hole next to the polluted water bin and poured a quarter of it in the hole and covered it up. I hosed down the residual and sprayed Lysol around the side of the trash bin. It was smelly for a while, but the hot sun eventually purified the smell. I still got more than half to go..............I thinking about pouring pine sol or Clorox in the polluted water.............................I'll try Clorox tomorrow.

you can simply repeat what you did. smell will be gone soon.

Update on the Yellow Traps. One is sticky on both sides, the other are bowls filled with soapy water.

Both are working well. I’ve caught one bee and one wasp on the sticky traps. Otherwise various flying insects from tiny things to flies. The bowls are two shades of yellow, but neither is outperforming the other.

Also, I used wheat germ mixed with Sevin powder for the baby grasshoppers. This stuff needs to stay dry. I’ve only seen one baby grasshopper since, but honestly it was to hot to hunt for any yesterday, so I can’t say how well it worked.

I did have to spray liquid Sevin on some plants that were showing a lot of munching on the leaves…but I was trying to be sparing with it. Usually, I can get away with only 1 application to knock back the insects and the plant has a chance to grow bigger and not be as affected by a few insects. Always trying to minimally use the pesticides, and these yellow traps will be a good compliment.

@CNJ I'd be careful about adding chlorox, or any other chemical to the witches brew you've got going in the can. You've already got a high ammonia content from adding the chicken manure, and who knows what from the fermentation of the other compost. Adding chlorine to that is a recipe for disaster. Ammonium Chloride is no good for the lungs and then where can you pour it? The high salts content will kill off your lawn.

We don't use things that will draw in more things, like the traps or the zappers. Biting flies are just part of the landscape here, come with stock and cattle. We spray to repel and do that as little as possible and still manage them.

This is accurately it in a nutshell. And most of those moving in are from CA and they want their pretty patch of lawn in the new development... that was built on dry scrubland that has not been lush in living memory. And the HOA says you'll get fined if you let your 12x20 patch of lawn, or water sucking non-native trees and shrubs, die.

It's explosive growth in an ecosystem that cannot sustain it long term. A few more decades and they'll be trucking in water to every neighborhood. We left.
That's crazy, why can't they xeriscape! Embrace the natural environment, nourish what naturally thrives, it is even more beautiful & beneficial to the environment. Get rid of the stupid grass lawns! I can't imagine being fined for that! Seems like no one is using common sense. If having a green lawn is that much work & costly to the point that they have to install watering systems, seems like something should click in their brains...🤔

Morning. Got a half inch of rain overnight. :yesss:

Not much new in the garden. My experiment with hand pollinating squash the day after the flower bloomed was a fail. Seems female squash are only viable the day they are open, which I kind of figured. Only male flowers on the cucumbers so far.

I'm so bad at pinching suckers on my brandywine tomatoes. Some how I look every day, but I always miss & end up with 2 tops. 🙄 Really doesn't seem that hard yet I fail! LOL Last year I didn't prune or stake a sungold at all & that thing produced more than any plant I've ever grown. Its offspring are popping up all in the garden paths & I'm letting them grow. Going to leave them to do their thing, no pruning until I can't get around them.

Does anyone not pinch or prune tomatoes?

Turned on the soaker hoses in 3 beds (2 raised, 1 large). They got a good drink, but not a really deep drink. I was short on time to get both watered before leaving. Plus, we are supposed to get rain later today. Not sure if it will materialize or not, but one can hope. At least the plants should be happy with the water-they were beginning to look wilty last night.

My main objective is to remove bottom leaves, branches to increase air flow. Otherwise, they grow so fast!
