What did you do in the garden today?

In my experience (I grew them last year) Early Girl is very much a store-type tomato. They produce a lot and store very well, but the flavor is sub-par (admittedly with heavy rain, which can dilute flavor, but the other tomatoes I grew tasted a lot better). I decided not to grow them this year. EDT: They're a very uniform shape and size. Very pretty tomatoes.

Rutgers tomatoes (which aren't on your list) are a smaller slicing tomato, but very prolific, fairly early, and the flavor is decent.

I think I'll try Glacier next year.
We got seeds for glacier from Sandhill preservation. They grew and produced well. A friend LOVED them. So, this year while seed shopping, I came across another source of Glacier seeds: John Scheeper’s Kitchen Garden Seeds. Of course, I bought a pack bc I knew I’d grow Glacier again this year.

Now I have a few Glacier plants, and gave a few to the friend that loved them for his garden. Interestingly, these two sources (JSKGS and SHP) produced tomato plants with different leaves: one has typical tomato leaves, the other is potato leafed!! Waiting for tomatoes (I planted out later than usual), so I’ll have to report back on the two Glacier tomatoes!

Better get an early or super late start! Good luck be careful! 🐓❤️🌻
Nah that would make sense. It'll be right smack in the middle of the day at Peak temps.

You're in CT? There is a seed guy I ordered from this year who grows, collects, and harvests his own veggie seeds. Great quality so far. Has a plethora of Tomato varieties already adapted to CT climate. Definately worth checking out for NE gardeners.

Better keep an eye on that hosta! Once they get big theres enough for everyone to nibble. Not yet friends, not yet!! My chickens nibble the hostas and love digging under them when they are all big and bloomed. Those are some big nibbles tho. 😁🐓❤️

Bunnies or deer or pretty much anything.
Hey I got to thinkin as I was harvesting herbs last night for dinner...could this be rosemary yall instead of sage like I was thinking?
I know I had an awful time getting lavender to sprout and I reseeded several times. And I believe I might have done the same with rosemary lol?
Looks like rosemary, pinch and rub and smell your fingers! That is how I test what is what :lau

I might take you up on that offer, too! I'm not terribly sure where I'd put them, though...
One thing about walking onions... Like asparagus, where you put them is where they ARE. Think of them as a perennial crop, and plan on dedicating space for their forever home.

Wait, u dont garden in the buff?!
May 6 is World Naked Gardening Day. :lau

I pruned my tomatoes yesterday. Cut off everything from about 8-10" down, plus any suckers I saw. There's air flow there now, that's for sure. I need to water them today. I gave them a nice drink on Monday, but there hasn't been any rain in a week, at least. Maybe if I water today, it'll rain like they say it might Saturday night.

Sweet potato raised bed. Two slips of each variety planted, and 4 empty spaces for the coming two additional varieties.

This morning, the slips and leaves look better than yesterday when I was planting them.

I read up on planting them. The company I got these from recommends black plastic. Another site was indicating the rings to help keep plastic opened, and spot to water. So, here, I’m using both.

In the large bed, I reserved nearly the entire south side for the slips. Again, I reserved some spaces for the incoming slips. I just cut holes in the plastic and expanded as needed with my hands while scooping out dirt to plant. I’ll move some of the wood as I can get rocks over here. The wood allowed me to evenly space the slips bc I laid them down according to a tape measure. Peppers are behind the sweet potatoes, so they shouldn’t shade them terribly.

Then I planted one each of 6 varieties in the other large bed. South side again. I used the rings so I would remember they are there. No black plastic here bc I wanted to see what would happen, and how they would grow. There is a wide mulched path to the left, so room to spread. Problem is that I have melons planted all along here …so that they could spread into the mulch. Ummm, yeah, in about 3-4 weeks I don’t think I’ll be able to bring the hose over to this side.

Squash and cucumbers are what is planted along the cattle panels. Nearly this entire bed is vining type items!! 🤣
