What did you do in the garden today?

This is just some of the volunteer dill “in” my garden…😂

My feed bags don't have an arrow either. I just always knew this, growing up with horses. I had to teach DH to put the bags upright in the can or I couldn't open them. he didn't believe me.

It is a lot of work! My brother & nephew both make maple syrup. I think my bro hires someone to do it & he gets lots from his big property up in VT. My nephew taps a few maples in his yard & boils it down in a cast iron pot over the fire - more for fun than anything else. He only get a couple jars here & there.

I have 225 feet of chicken wire in my cart, I'm going to run it along the bottom of the garden fence. My fence now is 7 foot high deer net but the chippies & rabbits chew through the bottom of it to get in. So...it may look a little dumb but I don't want to do 7 feet tall of chicken wire so I'm going to go 1 foot apron, 2 feet up at the bottom over the deer netting already there. That should stop everything but the squirrels I think. It'll have to wait till winter though, too much growing to work around now. Does that sound like a dumb idea?
It may work. However, the chippies here climb trees. Big trees and try to raid bird nests. I’ve watched them do it.

of course I would not know it. we have 1 word for pumpkin and squash. I spent so much time to goole difference between squash and pumpkin. I still cannot recognize them. variety - what would that mean, lol.
All pumpkins are squash but all squash are not pumpkins . There are 4 main groups of squash with pumpkins in each group . So not all pumpkins can cross breed . Confused even more now ? :D Variety is the name given to a cultivar .

I am so tired of going out to check chickens and water all to find tons of stuff dug up!!! Completely killed a squash vine! My purple basil is half dead! Sage is probably gonna die cuz it has dug it up twice in a week! It even dug up daisies, lambs ear, and tulip and thyacin (spelling?) bulbs! Turned over medium size pots of everything just wreaking havoc!
Called son and told him I need him to come beat the thing to death (in the dark of course) or shoot with bow n arrow! It is so frustrating!!!
Only good thing is it hasn't done this to the raised bed at all!
Yall think ground hog or the ferrel cat? Or both?
I'm thinkin possum or armadillo. Both subsist on earthworms and grubs they dig up. And a freshly watered garden is the Garden of Eden to them. Could be raccoon though as they will also dig and eat, but are not dependent on them. I have trapped both coons and possums in my garden. They have ben bad this year 'cause of the drought we are in here in SE Tx.. The only place around with wet ground.

We have had 1/2" of rain in the past 48 hrs. Slowly. Took several hours each day to get that much. Oh well, at least slow, it didn't run off. But it is so dry here even a flash flood probably would'a soaked in. Maybe enough to prompt the peanut seeds I just planted to sprout.

Me too! We go out to breakfast and I have to nix omelets, eggs, quiche, etc. I told DH no more breakfast out…we do a much better job at home and we can save our money for an extra dinner out here & there!
I say the same thing! My youngest works at Cracker Barrel though so DH and I will go there occasionally after church on Sundays. I never get eggs because they simply don't compare to our farm raised eggs. Back in early May, we went back home to visit my in-laws. I took the opportunity to go to Bob Evans. It used to be one of my favorite places to eat when I was growing up. Not anymore... I hardly ate any of it. That's when I firmly made the decision that I will never again eat breakfast at a restaurant or hotel again. It simply can't compare to what we make at home and it's DEFINITELY not worth the cost!

I think many of us can relate! I pulled the rest of my carrots today because something is taking them out one by one from underground. It has even started pulling my chives underground and eating them! When I was digging out my carrots, I came across a big 3" tunnel underground so whatever it is must be pretty big. Do voles get that big?

I can't stomach that pancake syrup or "table syrup" nonsense either. For a couple of years I had given up eating pancakes altogether because I, as a teenager, would have horrible heartburn when I went to bed later. Then I was introduced to real maple syrup and pancakes were back on the menu with no issues. I dream of having maple trees someday and tapping and cooking my own syrup. Yum!
I planted a sugar maple in the very corner of our pasture just so I can dream of real maple syrup... 😂 (Sadly this is not a joke....) Since this dream will likely never come to fruition due to time and hot weather, I buy my real maple syrup on Etsy and have it shipped. There's also a thread on BYC for a bunch of people who tap trees and make their own.
