What did you do in the garden today?

Evening everyone.... last night we had so much lighting I thought the lights were left on at one am. My big shepherd dog (Walter) was a mess and woke me up. It was pouring and very cool out (almost unseasonably). So I grabbed a blanket and sat out in my hammock a while to watch the lighting. Rain stopped at 8am so I picked blueberries with my little one. Checked the loofa squash, giant pumpkins an butternut...then picked a couple cucumbers and debated what to do this fall. We might be building a hoop house so I can grow year round. Then I let the girls out because one young rooster (13 weeks old) had decided that yes crowing is happening now. All in all a beautiful day that wasn't even close to the 99-100 degree days of late.

At the moment July is much cooler than June was

I got nothing done in the garden today. Didn't even go look. I went to an ophthalmologist for an exam. They dilated my eyes, and I didn't want to stay out in the sun any longer than necessary. So I took a nap. Now I wish it were 1 pm so that I could go get a bunch of stuff done! :D
If you don't get up early in the morning I have found night gardening with a headlamp quite fun...also necessary for those insane hot days lol.

I get up about 6, to let the chickens out. I have thought about going out to weed with a headlamp, but wondered if I'd have every bug in the neighborhood on me.

I think it would be very interesting to sit out there and watch for critters... Maybe jump up and yell BOO! to see if I can scare them away. :lau

Today I hand pollinated a squash. I hope it takes! Tried to finish the coop and almost made it before dark…pulled a few blighty leaves off the tomatoes. I have a lot of garden work to do, but I want to get the girls outside in the coop before I tackle the long projects!

Made a kale salad (massaged with olive oil), added cashews, dried cherries, carmelized onions, goat cheese, a squeeze of lemon, and some pear vinaigrette…a great summer treat!

I was really surprised how good the Double Red Sweet Corn tasted this year! It's an heirloom variety and it's so pretty!

I received two big bags of corn in a swap that I believe are both hybrid varieties but it says they're supposed to have good flavor so I don't really mind. Hybrid just means if I save the seeds that I won't know what I'll get the following year but I honestly have gotten some really good produce planting mysteries and allowing cross pollinated volunteers to grow, lol.
I'll look it up.... Always open to new things

Good morning gardeners. It’s 0230 and I’ve been out to water already. There’s the full moon behind a bunch of clouds with lightning but I didn’t hear thunder. It’s currently 97* and I’m sweaty. Got my Instant Pot yesterday and my mom got me a recipe book for it. It’s not like there aren’t a billion websites with recipes, but it does have good sounding recipes I want to try. Anyway, I’m off to look at canners. The big pot I have has been used to scald and pluck chickens so don’t think I’ll use it for canning. Have a great Friday Eve all!

One of my melon plants had to be ripped out. It just started to wilt part way down the vine. No evidence of bugs, or anything else. It hadn’t put off any blooms yet, so not too likely that it was wilt spread by cucumber beetles. There are 3 other plants in the same hill, so I ripped it out. So far, the other 3 look good.

Will water today - I think just some areas need it. We are supposed to get rain on Saturday, and some more on Sunday-although not much either day.
