What did you do in the garden today?

I picked a bunch of green beans, some puny carrots and the rest of The watermelon radish. I was able to get an order put in for sweet potatoes at Sandhill Preservation. Thanks @Acre4Me! Haven't gotten them yet but am waiting on pins and needles. I have almost an entire bed waiting for them. I dont have black plastic though. I dont know where to get it.
Does anyone know whats on the root of my radish?

Here's what I know about cantaloupe.

Propping the melons up on something (I really like bricks for this) will keep most of the ground things from getting into them. Mine had a tendency to start rotting on the spot where they touched the ground too, and this helped prevent that.

When are they ripe...
The slip test: You can see the stem separating from the melon, and they will pick easily.
The sniff test: They smell sweet and melon-y.
The color test: The skin under the netting should be a buff color, not green. I use this for judging if a store bought melon is ripe. Or, ripe-ish. They're never as good as home grown or farmer's market melons.

I've been told that melons do not get sweeter once they're off the vine. They may get a bit softer, though.

I learned that melons have to be about the size of my fist by the first weekend of August, or shortly after, to have time to ripen. Therefore, any that are not that big get culled. This forces the plant to put all its energy and sugar production into the melons that are on the vine. Once I started doing that, I got sweeter melons!
Ok I think we are getting close!
Still some green under there - should i let it stay on vine longer?

Back from Maine! Yay!

One row of beans is probably about done, and it went quickly while I was gone. A green variety, and I don't remember which. The other row is Dragon Tongue, and again, they are going to be a stellar performer. They're just starting and look like they will go gang busters.

The tomatoes are looking... some great, some good, some not so good. I will definitely grow Hungarian Heart again. Some are freaking HUGE! except a deer chomped on my huge one. And it wasn't even ripe. I picked a few to ripen on the counter.

Ok, this bit has me worried. I have two hills of butternut squash in each garden. One got chomped on a bit, so those two are way behind. The other two are vining and growing well. I had two small squash on one of those plants, and I think deer got them, so no squash on the vines. Now none of the plants have ANY female blossoms. Not. A. Single. One.

I asked Google, and it can be excess heat, or too much nitrogen. I'm thinking it's the heat. Now I'm wondering if there will be time to get decent sized squash. We could get frost mid-September, or it could be late and be mid-October. I've seen both.

In better news, we did get rain while I was gone, on Saturday night. About 2" of it.

In other good news, I'll be digging potatoes and onions for tomorrow's dinner. Several of the taters that I planted early are dying back. Since I don't have any spuds on hand, I'll dig them as I need them.

I bought black plastic at Menards. But any big box store sells rolls of it!

Looks like the effects of root knot nematodes maybe?
