What did you do in the garden today?

Picked a bunch of green beans. Pollinated some squash. Debating pulling the pickling cukes, I'm overwhelmed with Suyos so I don't need them & they get in my way. Have a mater turning red - would love a BLT this weekend! Going to pull the last of the onions & make onion soup tmrw, would be good with at BLT. 🤞 Found another hornworm. Need to feed the garden this weekend & water - STILL no rain here. It crunches when I walk, we are classified as being in a severe drought now.

Had a horrible day at work, so glad it's my weekend. I need to check on the rutabaga & possibly thin them, they might be overcrowded. Would love to get some turnips in so I need to go to the garden store.

Thinking about a cucumber broccoli soup. I won't waste the cukes but we aren't fans of cuke soup. Maybe mixed in with broccoli it'd be better? Will likely make a cucumber bread too.

Good and bad:

GOOD: baby butternut squash

BAD: Japanese Beetles!! STILL AROUND. This is a bad year for them. We took down the traps 2 weeks ago. Still picking them off various plants. Yes, at least 5 in this pic.

Picked some beans and more pear tomatoes, and a cucumber! Looks like this might be my best cucumber year, there’s a bunch almost ready to pick! Saw one of my pattypan squash got pollinated and is growing. Kale seed has sprouted after the two short rains this week. Need to clean out a bit more in the boxes but I like leaving my spinach and arugula that went to seed for the pollinators…maybe Sunday I’ll pull them and replant both for the fall. Rained on & off most of the day so didn’t get deep into any garden projects.

I've started decapitating sunflowers in order to bring the heads inside and dry the seeds. When I brought the first one in holding it upright by the length of stalk I left on it I was overcome by the urge to recite a poem, by Henry Gibson. (Let's see who the old people are here.)
Is this the poem?

I used to like fresh air
When it was there
And water—I enjoyed it.
Till we destroyed it
Each day the land’s diminished
I think I’m finished.

I pruned tomatoes and eggplants ( a whole chicken feed bag full of trimmings). Now I can actually see how much fruit/veg is coming on and maybe there will be some airflow to keep plants healthier.

I snagged a few suckers to root in water for fall garden, replacements or for friends in Phoenix area to plant later. It's interesting to see how the eggplants can have suckers too, Idk if I could root those or not but I have so many more eggplants than I need so I'm not rooting those this time.

I did try to root eggplant suckers but never succeeded.

Something took a bite out of my 1 giant tomato I was going to make a BLT with this weekend. I'm so mad, I was looking forward to the first tomato of the year.
BOOO! That would make me so sad and angry! I am sorry @Sueby if you were closer I would share one of mine.

Trying to remember what squash I planted where this morning! Haha
