What did you do in the garden today?

The tomatoes in the hoop house are now 12 feet tall. Next year, only determinates in there and I'll stagger the plantings.
I reached out to grab the one slicing tomato I saw on the way out of the garden and by the time I was done, my shirt was full of fat, san marz, federele tomatoes, 9 pounds worth.
That brings this season's running total to 21 pounds, and we haven't even started yet!

Everything was well watered yesterday, so it's as ready as it can be for another scorching day....115 with the humidity.
Also ordered the cockerel and a hen buddy for him to play with. They'll be here Next Tuesday.
Have a great day everyone.

Should I/can I top them off?
I always top mine and of Aug/beg of Sept so that the fruit thats on it has time to ripen. Plus I can't reach them & at that point they have gotten out of control, lol.

What'd you get?

All watered. My rutabaga are already so big! & my turnips are coming up already. Got another gallon of beans in the freezer. All the Black Eyed Susans that were added last year have died from lack of water. The older ones are ok. I need to pick some more sage for the freezer. I fed the beans, though I don't think that's what they needed.

Light Sussex cokerel and a Welsummer pullet from Chicken Scratch. I love their birds.

plant marigolds with onion and garlic. they will deter worms or whatever it is.
Ah! I plant marigolds to help keep soldier beetles off the tomatoes. I'll definitely plant more next year.

And move the garlic/onions to the other end of the garden.

Where, right now, the butternut squash is growing zero squash. I don't know what happened. No female flowers. I read that heat can make that happen, and we have had the heat! I think I'll buy a couple of b-nut squash this fall and skip growing it next year. Last year we got zero, and in years past, we've had 50. Or 90.

I feel about purslane how a surprising number of people here feel about pigweed. It's easy to pull, a great treat for my rabbits, you can pickle the stems (or eat it while you weed--it's not at all bitter) it's low-growing enough that it's not likely to crowd established plants out, and it keeps water from evaporating out of the soil. As weeds go, it's probably my favorite.

I don't know how to eradicate it from a garden, but in a yard, grass will crowd it out, because it's a later season plant (or at least it is around here), and needs a lot of sunlight. Add topsoil and seed down with something thick, and it shouldn't be a concern next year.
I've been trying to sow purslane all summer and the dang rabbits keep eating it all before it can get established! 🤬

Everyone's tomatoes look so nice and plump. Mine don't look that nice at all... Between the heat and the bugs, they look like ghetto tomatoes...all battered and scarred.

I'm waffling on whether to pull the zucchini or not. It hasn't produced a female flower in over a month but it's teasing me like it might. I really don't need any more zucchini but I'd like to clear the space for fall veggies. But it hurts my soul to pull a plant that's still green and vibrant. 😂 :barnie

I'm SO SICK of this heat already.... This is the reading as of 11 am. Just brutal. I'm so over it already... I was looking at radar for the entire globe and it seems there's hardly any precipitation anywhere... Seems a bit odd and concerning.

We're dealing with the same heat here. It's stifling. I really need to get something else planted because much of my garden is fizzling out but it's so hot that I don't want to go out there, lol.
We've had an abundance of watermelon this year though! We have been harvesting all season, 1 or 2 here and there but last week we harvested 12 melons all at once! I've been trying unusual watermelon recipes all week to try to use some of them up.

It's weird, I know, but hear me out, this was pretty good! Lol!
