What did you do in the garden today?

My dear chickens “helping” harvesting the Portuguese cabbage 🙄

Last real rain we had was in June, just light mist during the nights otherwise. Better than nothing though.

I bet they'll sink if you have them uneaten long enough.

I'm already making next year garden plans as well. No matter how cold and wet the spring is I'm going to start the peppers when I start the tomatoes.

My dilly beans floated at first too but by the time I opened them they had sunk. Unfortunately, they were inedible :hit I must have messed up somewhere.

Out of the 8 EEs DP hatched, 3 turned out to be roosters. I wish we could have kept them, they were so beautiful, love those muffs! :love

Sounds good to me, I'd love a little relief from the watering.

Thanks for that last bit, I've had some pretty wild siphoning and the food sticking out always gives me pause.

Happy Birthday @pennyJo1960! And great garden porn @Acre4Me!

Been busy so I keep falling behind and I'll never catch up. I've been crappy fishing a LOT so between that and the garden I don't have much time at the computer anymore. The fishing has been going great! I even pick up a bass and a few trout as well.

No tomatoes even to the "white" stage yet but I have a good deal of green ones promising me the future. The pickling cucumbers have gone crazy and are climbing over everything, lots of tiny cucumbers but I'll really have to dig for them. I'll plant them again on a better trellis next year and some regular green cucumbers as well. I've picked enough zuccs for a couple of batches of fritters (delicious) so far. Too many have been under-fertilized but the chickens are happy to have those. The wax beans are just starting to bloom, the snap peas have all been removed with carrots and chard planted in their places. I made red currant and gooseberry jelly with the crop this year.

I left the currant stems in the pot when making the jelly and it really helped the jelly set up without any added pectin.

Here's a recent pic of DP's lovely pond system.

She's so proud of it and rightly so. I put up our shade pavilion next to it and we sit in the shade and listen to the water splashing. She even set a timer on the pump to shut off at dusk and on at dawn to avoid calling the local raccoons in.

Here is one of the tiny tree frogs we grew from eggs in a temporary pond in the yard, we find them all over now.View attachment 3213841

The preying mantises finally hatched out a couple of weeks ago, I hope they have time enough to reach the size to lay eggs for next year.

Oh, and heaven help me I've been making a lot of ice cream too, fresh peach, cherry vanilla, and banana.
Nice bass!! We haven’t been fishing in quite some time, I miss it!

Good morning gardeners. Since we didn’t get anybrain I’m going to feed the few remaining items In the shade garden and spray with neem early this morning. My sleep schedule is so messed up, I’m ready for a nap right after work and if I take one I’m up late and can’t get up in the morning. If I stay awake until “later” I’m crashed out by 1730 or 1800 and then wake up at 0200. Stupid allergies are out of control this year also. Going to try Allegra since it might also work for the hives; I think it’s time to give Zyrtec a ready for a while, at least for me. Anyway, the boys helped me clean up the yard a bit and I got all the bark mulch moved. The night blooming jessamine in the shade garden already looks happier without the straw that was in there. I’m going to tackle that some more this morning too. The apricot at the end of the row is really looking better and there’s tons of new growth on it. That’s all getting a spray too this morning. I’m headed off to make coffee and mix stuff for the plants. Have a great day everyone!

I totally lost the thread but oye vey it's been busy. My husband decided that he wants to try Hill beds (there's a German name but it's too early for me to spell). We were going to tear up one side of the garden for it this weekend but....rain lots and lots of rain until the later hours of the day. I maybe calling it early but sitting on my porch this morning I can feel it. The subtle hints of fall...even my bees are acting like autumn is slowly approaching. It's 70(praise God) out and after a morning hike I will be living in the garden today. Gotta prep an area for the "test hill" and then get straw, dirt and mulch for the rest. Also my giant pumpkin is now probably hitting close to 40 lbs...stem wrapped in foil, straw and cloth bed this year I'm going for broke and hoping for a thousand pound pumpkin. The last one (2019) was only 200 lbs.
