I think I had shared here a few weeks ago that I let my broody cuckoo marans have a single egg to sit on. I didn't want to mess with trying to break her out of it, as that may have taken nearly as long as just letting her sit. The idea was also to test her quality as a broody, see if she had what it takes to sit there for the 21 days and tend her "nest."
So yesterday morning I go out and hear the loud and telltale "Cheep cheep cheep!" of a baby. Sure enough, she hatched that one dang egg. Now she just has to keep the others off the baby. So far she's an appropriately cranky mama. I put water and food there for the baby to get to and yesterday at least once I heard the mama doing that particular sound they make when they call the littles to food. Too cute, lol.
So if mama hen does a good job raising baby chick, she'll get a special leg band.
Still no frost here, and none in the forecast either.

We had a light frost 3 nights.ago...then again the next night and then the 3rd night was low 20s...everything is black and swiveled and looks horrible!!!
I don't remember us ever havin that bad a frost so early before...still no rain.

I got the garlic bed primed for now. We are supposef to get a lot of rain next week so hopefully all will be good to plant next weekend. I want to throw some aged compost on top then cover with my portable hoops and plastic. Fingers crossed. My poor balding PBR was looking bad this morning so I gave her warm chicken feed mash with scrambled egg. She’s looking much perkier this afternoon. Ok, time to feed the chickens and the dogs. Oh, we got the DNA results back from my rescue dog Chloe. She 49% Miniature Pinscher and 51% ChiWeenie.

We’re having cool mornings and pleasant evenings. The late afternoons are a bit warm but tolerable. The chickens have done a wonderful job with the compost pile this summer. I have a nice pile of dirt I can use for the main walkway in the garden. It had lots of yard clippings in it at one point so I don’t think I’ll use it between the rows, but the main walk is at the low end so shouldn’t impact anything. Tomorrow we have some cleanup to finish, and I hope to get the bed built so I can plant the garlic. I’m going to let the chickens in there to find any bugs and such too.
here ants would take away all the seeds. if there is any humidity at night you can disperse your seeds in the evening the day before it rains. that way seeds would be safe.

Great idea... The hard part is timing it with the rain. Right now I'm still unsure when or if it will rain. They said Saturday and Sunday. That changed to Monday and Tuesday. Now it just says Tuesday. I'm watching closely to see how the forecast changes day by day.
Just gave the chickens their 2nd round of wormer. Got everyone in the main coop this time. Made a HUGE mess in the process. The bright idea I had to put mineral oil in a spray bottle with some blue food coloring didn't quite work out as well as I hoped. The spray DID help me identify who was wormed versus who wasn't but the only thing that turned blue was my hands and clothes. Did I mention how much I really dislike worming? Such a PITA. Not to mention that I accidentally spilled half the bottle of wormer on the floor.
Morning . 55 for a low and 80 predicted for a high . Slept with window open . Did not do much yesterday . Sore muscles needed a rest . Had a dermatology appointment and had a couple f things froze . One was precancerous . Got to take care of these things .

Fluctuating temperatures here, a little early to be this chilly, actually saw frost a few mornings ago. I had a morning doc appt, took the bike as DH had the truck for work & I was freezing the rest of the day! I usually don't need to dig out the long underwear til Dec...well I'm wearing my layers Now! Yet, today may get up to 65 degrees, weird.
Well the gardening was done & I cleaned up, pruned & had the fire pit burning last weekend, probably do more this weekend, too, after we pick up feed today. A few things are still blooming, a hardy Butterfly Bush. I said goodbye to my fluttery friends & snapped a few pics.
My "dog" the wild fox visits me & lays down gazing at the fire with me. He can visit, but he knows he isn't gonna get any of my chickens or s'mores. Actually, I'm very fortunate, foxes & I have a synergy here, they can do all the rodent patrol they want, but leave my flock alone. For years & several fox generations, they've been good dogs. Not so much as a hole dug near the chickens or pigeons.
2 tornadoes "bounced over" the coops, loft, barn & house, too. Thank you Mother Nature, truly appreciate it & love all God's creatures. We are blessed.
