What did you do in the garden today?

Fluctuating temperatures here, a little early to be this chilly, actually saw frost a few mornings ago. I had a morning doc appt, took the bike as DH had the truck for work & I was freezing the rest of the day! I usually don't need to dig out the long underwear til Dec...well I'm wearing my layers Now! Yet, today may get up to 65 degrees, weird.
Well the gardening was done & I cleaned up, pruned & had the fire pit burning last weekend, probably do more this weekend, too, after we pick up feed today. A few things are still blooming, a hardy Butterfly Bush. I said goodbye to my fluttery friends & snapped a few pics. My "dog" the wild fox visits me & lays down gazing at the fire with me. He can visit, but he knows he isn't gonna get any of my chickens or s'mores. Actually, I'm very fortunate, foxes & I have a synergy here, they can do all the rodent patrol they want, but leave my flock alone. For years & several fox generations, they've been good dogs. Not so much as a hole dug near the chickens or pigeons. 2 tornadoes "bounced over" the coops, loft, barn & house, too. Thank you Mother Nature, truly appreciate it & love all God's creatures. We are blessed.

Those foxes look pretty well fed and healthy...so no need for chickens! Great pics!

Those foxes look pretty well fed and healthy...so no need for chickens! Great pics!

We have tons of huge wild rabbits, too, so if they hunt rabbit they must only hunt what they need & leave the majority to reproduce. Foxes enjoy playing in my yard, bringing all their kits from the farm field den to roll around in my grass & relax in the sun, back by the big barn, not near my flock at all. I told them they could hang out there (kinda joking) but much to my amazement, they seem to understand my request & respect it. I asked them to stop peeing on my truck tire & they haven't done it since. Go figure! Furthest back part of my property is their playground, that's their hangout, I get some pretty good photos, too. The seem to enjoy posing. I have videos of their kits playing.

Beautiful pictures!

A couple of years ago we had a grey fox vixen who had a couple of kits in the field behind us. I had one of the kits come up to me curiously at the fence line one day. It got within 5 or 6 ft before running back into the brush. I haven't seen any foxes around this year but my neighbor said she saw one chasing one of my chickens in her backyard. She said a rooster came over and soundly trounced the fox into retreat. So I know they are still around but it's weird that we haven't seen them personally.

Eh... Let's just say broody hen didn't do a great job....

Watered the garden this morning for the first time in... a week I think! We had some rain a few days ago and it's been cooler, so the soil stayed moist longer. Nice little break for me. Still pulling tomatoes off the vine as soon as they start to turn a little. I've got a little shelf under a light in the kitchen where they sit and ripen nicely. Tasty! First time I've ever had my own cherry tomatoes and they are sweet and full of flavor.

The pickled banana peppers turned out great! Hubby keeps snacking on them, lol.

He does, honestly I think he enjoys the attention. He will sit with me for hours at the fire pit & he comes over to sit by me when I photograph sunsets, he even gazes at the sunsets!

I've seen some amazing footage of foxes getting really close and friendly with people outside. It's almost like they missed out on being our dogs and are trying to get their application in for the job now. So lucky yours don't bother your livestock.

I'm going to hard boil some of our tiny eggs and put them in the jar the garlic & rosemary pickled cherry tomatoes were in.

We got rain! A little more than half an inch so far, it comes is squalls here mostly.
