I wish keeping chickens was cheaper than $6-8 dozen eggs. LOL.
It's not. But I fear a lot of people think so and are repeating the great chicken buy and abandon that went on two years ago.

So far every person who has contacted me already has a couple chickens. They just want a few more and don't want to pay the prices from the hatcheries or TSC apparently.

Our chicks arrived at tsc yesterday, haven't been to see the prices, but I need pine shavings so I'll look.
No more chicks for me.
If I need them, I'll wait for a broody. My lungs cannot handle the dust in the shop from chicks anymore

There are certain breeds that I really want. If I came across them at TSC or the feed store, it'd be hard to say no... But I don't think I could justify $50 ($7 x 6 chicks minimum purchase by state law + tax, etc), no matter what breed.

Plus I usually always let a broody sit on a few eggs.

I am in a dilemma, I found out that my Katana tomato plants have the Yellow Leaf Curl Virus resistance, but all of the Katana plants got stunted, so it must be the similar tomato stunting virus they are having problems with in Guam. I posted a video about this virus on this thread and in the video a seed company found some plants that were resistant to this Guam Virus. However, in my last search, I could not find the varieties they mentioned for sale in the USA.

Anyway I did manage to track down one of the companies and found that the disease resistance listed had Yellow leaf Curl Virus before the test trials on the new virus took place, so I am on the right path to finding one.

So I've been trying to reduce my flock numbers a little bit. We butchered 10 chickens about 2 weeks ago. Last weekend I gave away 4 layers. Giving away another 3 layers this weekend. Wasn't really looking for money. Just good homes.

Anyway, since then I've come to find out that people are desperate for chickens. I've had 4-5 people asking to buy laying hens, chicks, or hatching eggs. I'm going to put some eggs in the incubator this weekend for them. I'm selling them rather cheap ($1.50/hatching egg or $4/unsexed chick). DH stopped by TSC to pick up some horse supplements and noticed chicks are in. They are selling them for $6-$7 per chick! Whomever was there from the Hatchery said they were selling adult hens for $50 EACH! So after griping at me for having too many chickens, DH is now miffed that I GAVE AWAY $350 in laying hens for free....

My response? "Well it IS Lent. You are supposed to do an act of charity!"

I have 3 local raised RSL pullets coming in April at $25 a piece. I think I paid 20 for them a few years ago so not that drastic of a COVID change. I don’t think thats a bad price for here - I was going to pay $50-60 for 4 shipped hatchery chicks. Small amounts are always more expensive to ship. DH thinks $25 for a pullet is insane though, lol. I think he doesn’t consider the time, care & food that goes into raising them when he sees a dollar chick at TS.

Raining - melt snow, melt! Supposed to get more snow/ice/rain tomorrow night into Sat - hoping for all rain. Then it looks clear next week & 40s during the day. I hope it stays that way.

Re: the chick thing. Here's a story from a friend of mine that makes me CRINGE!

The mother of one of my friend's coworkers has ordered 32 chicks for April delivery. To keep in her basement.

Friend wanted to know if I knew of anyone who would want these birds after "mom gets tired of them."

I don't think $25 for a pullet is outrageous. $50 however.... That's insane. Of course ALL livestock prices have increased. In December I paid $300 for a young Nigerian Dwarf doe. You could get them for $100 or less right before Covid. Just crazy....
