What did you do in the garden today?

Cleaning out spent beds to prepare for fall planting. I'm hoping I haven't put it off for too long or that winter keeps at bay for a while. I'm only trying broccoli, brussel sprouts, lettuce, spinach, cabbage, etc ... It's still so hot out though. Everything sprouts but dies in the heat of the midday sun. Sigh. The life of the gardener.

I put two big wheelbarrow full piles of compost in the veggie garden then set the ladies free. In one day they had it completely knocked down, spread out and tiller in. Does anyone know if I van add amendments like blood meal while they are digging through there?

Now THIS is how you garden with chickens:

My pitiful peppers and tomatoes are still in there, but they are so busy knocking down piles that they don't even seem to notice. They are doing quick work of tilling in the compost. I have held off adding the other amending materials until I get everyone's opinions on the safeness of them.

Not much of a garden (maybe 15'x15') but I'm hoping for amazing results next year with their help.

I grow bamboo here (bahahhaa sorry let me rephrase, Bamboo is taking over here!

But n e ways, I have beans and peas coming up now...I chipped a few 10 foot bamboo poles. They are drying out...I know I chopped them to make bean supports but not quite sure how! Was going to try a TeePee type like an upsidedown tomato cage? But seems simple to make tho harvesting may be a pain in the butt. What's the best ways to utilize all this bamboo to make supports?
Last year I used bamboo as "stake" supports but by end of season single poles were too flimsy. (towards the end things started leaning lol bad but they made it most of the season.
I am hoping that my bamboo stakes will be delivered today. I plan to build kind of a frame for growing beans.I still have a ton of beans for planting

Ive been thinking small low A frame structure to allow light to surrounding plants but still dunno

ive been wondering how to let the chickens into the garden, we have a fairly extensive garden and getting more so every year. do the chickens eat the veggies or tend to avoid them and eat bugs? added some pictures of the garden before and after season this year. getting rather cold right now and need to harvest what's left.
I have found that the eating of the plants is not where the problem comes from. As you thought, they are too interested in the bugs and such to bother them. The problem comes from them digging and scratching at the base of the plants. They WILL uproot plants given enough time. I have cheap aviary netting around my garden (super cheap at $20 for 5'x 100'). It won't keep out other garden fans, but my chickens won't go over it because they don't see it and therefore assume it's some invisible fortress. I even use it around my property. Anyways, back to gardening, during the planting season I limit 4 chickens being in there and Only let them stay in for an hour or two. My whole flock with an entire day would demolish it.

Very nice!

I added my amendments except liquid ferts. Didnt bother my girls. I have them a day...they did great kicking it all around and I had very little spreading to do! If plants are in the garden, mine eat the fruit. And the bugs-and take leaves the bugs were on! But I plant extras because the most damage they have done is dust (well mudd lol) bathe at the base of the plants, sometimes uprooting the whole plant! So I limit their garden escapades to supervised unless I need compost spread for a day lol
