What did you do in the garden today?

I found 4 cherries on this bush cherry. The other bush had none. First time either fruited! I think they are 3 years old.

The Jerusalem artichokes are taking over this end of the raised bed. 😳 I need to make sure I harvest them this year. 🤣

Visitor today…I *tnink* it’s gone…

Came home at lunch, looked out the kitchen window. The barn door (people door) was open bc it was propped open, and an animal has in the doorway, its back was to me so it was looking in the barn. I couldn’t really tell what it was-a bit too big to be a cat, but not right shape to be dog/canine. I went out back door, closed it, my cat scooted under the car and I could see a stray cat a ways to my right. One of these things spooked the animal. It ran INTO my barn. Great. I do a search, cannot find it. I had kept people door opened, and also opened one of the large garage doors. No luck finding it. I went in to eat lunch.

Back out to the barn. I looked to see if cat was in her bed (her usual spot at most times), but she was not, telling me the animal was likely somewhere inside still. It was my cat’s usual deep nap time so, it was telling that she was not reclined in her bed. I found this:

Groundhog I think. I moved this cart and it ran out. But I couldn’t see if he left the barn. Since that was his most likely route (outside) I can’t imagine he would still be in my barn. Of course, I’m hearing random noises making me think it’s still in the barn!

Why is it so cute?! It would have scared the bejeezus out of me though, lol!

I did a quick tour of the back half of our garden to label the squash plants! The Jack Be Little Pumpkins didn't come up and there are 3 other varieties that I planted that I don't "see" yet but because some of them were planted closely, it's possible that they're just growing together and I don't see the little fruit starts yet.

Good morning gardeners. I got the high garden planted with everything but the tomatoes. I finished putting up the cages this morning. Yesterday was a lot of work but I did get the back yard mowed. First mowing of the season there. The green beans are continuing their slow rise from the dirt. I checked on the grape bare root plantings and one is definitely dead. Root rot. Two of the remaining 3 are feeling firm and rooted and one is a little wobbly. I just ordered 2 replacements from Stark Brothers. My butterfly bush is being delivered today. We're expecting about a quarter inch of rain tonight with cooler temperatures tomorrow. That might be a better planting day. I'm taking it easier today. Just planning on taking the weed whacker to the chicken yard and that's it. I'll try to get a little housework done but I need to rest. Have a great day all.

I took a morning walk through the garden, and if I'm not just imagining it, my tomato plants are a deeper shade of green after fertilizing them a couple days ago. The carrot, beet and chard seedlings look healthier too.

My peas have been blooming for a week or two but I haven't seen any pods yet. They can be hard to see so I look pretty close.

I'm going into town and buy some winter squash seeds, but they have to be bush, not vine squash. I think I can fit three or four hills into my raised beds.

Going to plant another row of rattlesnake beans today, too. The first row are starting to form their second set of true leaves, so it'll be good to have a later crop. And I'll try to pound a few t-posts into the ground and attach welded wire fence for the beans to climb on. Need to do that for the cucumbers, too.

And I need more peppers. I have seeds, so I guess I'll start them inside. Peppers like warmer weather than we're having now, so I don't think it's too late. Probably get them out in the garden by mid June.

Question in regards to carrots... This is my first year trying to grow them in a container. I can't remember which variety I planted in this particular pot - either Purple Dragon (likely) or St Valery. Anyway, I noticed that some of the carrot greens are turning reddish-purple. Is this normal or a sign of disease? I can't take a recent picture until Friday... Here's one I took a week or so ago. You can see the ONE green hanging over the side that's starting to change color. Looks normal otherwise (not wilted or dying). Since this picture was taken, about 10% of the greens in that corner of the pot have changed color. Just wondering if I need to do something.... I can take a picture when I'm home on Friday.
