What did you do in the garden today?

We're down 5" of rain since the first of May. None in the near future either.

I watered both gardens today, and gave everything a thorough soaking. Everything looks good. The plants have grown robust roots; I used to have to water every other day to keep them looking happy.

The honey bees like the asparagus flowers. I never would have guessed that. When I watered that patch, I held the spray nozzle low so that I wouldn't disturb the bees.

I snipped a twig of dill for DH to have on his pizza. :)

We're down almost 9, well 8.5........every drop now counts.

I built a support structure for my indeterminate tomato plants. I ripped a pair of 2x6x 8foot boards in half with my table saw. They were cull lumber from Home Depot, 70% off, so only a couple bucks each.

I used six 10' sections of cheap rope for the plants to be tied to, and with the way it's all put together the tomato vines have a little over 7 feet to climb.

I may need to attach more supports at the bottom to keep the thing from swaying in the wind, especially when the tomatoes get taller.

Anyway, the project wore my old self out. Went to the store and got a package of chicken drumsticks and got them cooking in a skillet. Just doused them with Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ sauce, so it's pan cooked BBQ chicken tonight. Probably not a good thing for the chickens to snack on, so unfortunately (haha) I'll have to eat them all myself.

I did give them a little canned salmon today for the first time. Those little suckers sure like their protein!

Two of them came when called and followed me down to the compost pile to scratch around.

I put up the fancy new netting around the garden today. It’s like a spiderweb! There’s two layers, so bugs get caught inside and they can’t get out. My chickens treat it like a salad bar.
I also found a full-on nest in one of my perennial gardens today. Yes, it had an egg in it. Plus a shell, a rock, and two bottle caps. I think I have a crow, not a chicken.

I’ve been surprised how much the bees really like the asparagus flowers too!

I was at the orange big box yesterday to pick up more paint. It was Bonnie Plant swap out day.
Every week they come out and remove all the old plants, no matter what they look like and replace them with new, smaller, fresh looking plants.
It's a crying shame!!!! They charge $6 for a pint size tomato or herb size and that for a 4 pack cell. And there they all are, crushed, stacked and headed for the compost and plastic recycling.
What a waste.

I always check the cull wood at Home Depot when I go to town. I have found some really good deals on usable cull lumber that I normally would not pay full price for at the store. I got some really good deals on plywood that had been used for shelving but did not have any retail stickers on the sheets. I picked up 2 full sheets of 3/4 inch shelving plywood for about $2.00 each. They were like new. Fantastic deal.
