What did you do in the garden today?

I found a solitary yellow jacket flipped upside in a waterer this morning. I watched it struggle for a few minutes and then took pity on it and gave it a stick to grab ahold of so it could get out. I really dislike yellow jackets but this one did nothing to me so I opted to let it live. Hope I don't regret that decision later. :fl
I used to joke that I would rescue bugs from the water trough and would do CPR on them 😁 I had a huge water beetle in the trough last year - I clean the trough every day so I would transfer it to a bucket - clean the trough and then return it to the trough. It got to an inch long and then I guess it took off for a new home. But it kept the trough clean of bug that fell in.

Still can’t believe I ran the mower over top of the yellow jacket nest here, the stings itch like crazy now. I pilfered the horses meds for some prednisone cream hahaha. I am sure Lulu won’t mind. Tomorrow I need to dead head my roses, the Japanese beetles have really done a number on them. So far they haven’t found my pole beans I planted purple ones this year.

DONE.
OMG 6 hours out there today. At one point it felt like 120'F.
I did 1.5 hours, 1.5 hours, and then 2 hours baling, and DH helped me pick them up with the gator and mini trailer, so that's 6 bales a run. It took us 40 minutes in the near dark and dark to load them in the curing in the shed. I can still pick up and throw/stack 60 pounders.
I break out in a wicked rash too, but there's NO WAY I'm wearing even short sleeves or pants. Shorts and a tank. The million little pokes and scratches are shoving exactly what I'm allergic to right into my skin. It's awesome.
BUT I'm currently NOT itchy. We'll see if that lasts. Hurray for allergy shots!?
I will nivage before bed though.
Good job! How many bales did you get off the field?

First cutting in a normal year is 80 bales. 40.5 bales darn drought. But anything is better than nothing.
When I finished it temp and dewpoint had it feeling like 120', that was at 930pm.
It's all stacked in the curing shed.

I'm still dragging today.

@Sally PB i read that spaghetti squash will continue to ripen even after picked so even if your plants don’t make it maybe you can at least rescue a few of your squash 🤞

Today’s haul of tomatoes from the 2 plants at the church garden. 🥰

Also picked a few green peppers. They were still on the smaller side by some were getting big damage. Also pulled the carrots. First time ever being this successful with carrots. Had to pull them though because they were growing into the hardware cloth under the raised bed. 🤣
Am interested to see how the different colors taste.

The cherry tomatoes are from my house garden and the jalapeños and Cheyanne peppers are from the church garden too.
I watered the church garden and the in ground garden at my house.
It was a scorcher today. 106 with the heat index.
Tomorrow is supposed to be hotter. 😞

Hi! Very long time lurker, first time poster. I absolutely love reading this forum & learning so many gardening tips from you guys! I have decided to finally take the leap & join in on the fun because I have a question I can't find the answer to!

Last night I canned my first ever batch of tomato sauce. I left 1/4 in headspace as my recipe told me to, but it appears a tiny bit of sauce creeped out at some point. I took off my rings this AM & they were a little stuck. You can see the sauce on the lids & rings. All of the lids did seal though. I also cleaned each rim & top of jar before putting tops on. I did not over or undertighten either (I think). Is this ok?

Thanks!!
Welcome home made sausce is the best !

Camaro was the best performing determinate tomato in my desease infested yard. The shoulders didn't crack and it set fruit in my hot climate. Most of the tomatoes were 8 oz with some larger ones and I like the taste.

Camaro VFFFA Hybrid Tomato
This variety offers resistance to Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus and the same disease-resistance package as Charger Hybrid, but with a stronger plant and even better fruit quality. Compact plants perform well even in hot weather, putting on heavy sets of deep-red, firm, round tomatoes that are an extra-large 10 to 14 oz. size. This is a good choice for both commercial planting as well as home gardens. Determinate. 72 days.

LOL! I picked up a bee the other day, he was laying on the deck looking real bad, and put him on the edge of my critter waterer. He was gone a couple hours later so either the birds got him or he got a sip & flew off.
My family doesn’t like green peppers 🙈
We don't like them here either.

They look perfect!

Morning all. Power went off at 5 this morning - on my day off & I couldn't get back to sleep. 🤬

Another hot humid one here. We did get rain last night so I won't have to water, probably. Headed out to walk the garden & water the dog. The crazy mutt won't drink in the house, only outside. 🙄 He's so weird.

I have a lot of European paper wasps here. They're not aggressive, but there were 3 nests covered with young ones right at my front door, one was large with 20 or so little ones crawling around on it.

I mixed up 1 teaspoon of Dawn dish detergent and a cup of water. I couldn't believe how well it worked when I sprayed the nests. Most were motionless within 15 seconds. And once the first spray hits them, it seems to make them unable to fly

:fl Would that work on these nasties? I have two nests in the run right now, and another on the coop.

I'm afraid to use Raid, since the wasps will fall into the run, and the chickens might eat them.

So far, they fly around up near the roof of the run, not down at chicken level, or much near me. But I do know how badly a sting hurts!
