What did you do in the garden today?

I really dislike yellow jackets but this one did nothing to me so I opted to let it live. Hope I don't regret that decision later.
LOL, I'm the same way with random insects and animals. Call me stupid, but one time I was turning the compost pile and uncovered a nest of baby mice and let them live. Glad I have cats now, who do the dirty work I prefer not to do.

Camaro was the best performing determinate tomato in my desease infested yard. The shoulders didn't crack and it set fruit in my hot climate. Most of the tomatoes were 8 oz with some larger ones and I like the taste.

Good info! Thanks!

Just how many varieties of tomatoes did you grow this year? From your posts I'm guessing around 20 different types???

:fl Would that work on these nasties? I have two nests in the run right now, and another on the coop.

I'm afraid to use Raid, since the wasps will fall into the run, and the chickens might eat them.

So far, they fly around up near the roof of the run, not down at chicken level, or much near me. But I do know how badly a sting hurts!
I'm guessing that yeah, it would work on those. Those are different wasps, but the nest is identical. Wear long pants, a winter coat, eye protection, gloves and a stocking cap just in case, and spray them down!

I use an old Simple Green spray bottle. It has stream and a wider "spray" modes. I used the spray setting from about a foot away from the nest. Do it early in the morning while they're still moving slow.

Good luck! And remove the nest, because more will hatch out of it.

So ~ I have these low-acid, Cream Sausage tomatoes that I started from seed. I had no idea how prolific they would be - or I'd have planted 1 - not 4. What in the world will I do with all these yellow tomatoes, with dozens still on the vines? Maybe I'll freeze dry them and layer them into lasagna, occasionally.

I'm betting I'm not the only one with wasp nests in my coop/run. I think I'll make a thread and see what other people have to say.

What most concerns me is chickens eating the dead wasps. When I know the birds can't get them, I hit them with wasp/hornet spray.

Tomato color does not matter to me. I add them in with the rest for sauce or canned tomatoes.

How about making tomato jam/preserves? I remember my mom making some when I was a kid and it was pretty good once you got over the weird factor. Tomatoes ARE fruit.
