What did you do in the garden today?

13 pages behind!

It is dry out there. We are supposed to get rain…but some weather sources say little to none. We really need some rain!

Took 23 chickens to auction today, but 5 were chicks with their momma, she hatched them 2 weeks ago. We should be getting new chicks within the next couple of weeks -waiting for a call saying shipped, and then a nervous wreck bc the USPS can be slow…let’s hope they are not slow with moving the chicks through the system.

For dinner, we had all garden items: potatoes, beets, glazed carrots, along with some meat.

We have harvested rat-tail radish seed pods. They are crisp and spicy raw. I’m planning to pickle them. Should I water bath can them? Anyone know? @WthrLady, @Sueby , @Wee Farmer Sarah @TJAnonymous
Not a clue. Sorry.

I finally staked my eggplant up. It had been falling down, like on the ground, for a while. It’s finally up now lol and picked another handful of tomatoes and a ripe beefsteak. Made a delicious BLT with it LOL

BLTs are my favorite part of summer... Right next to fresh Cesar salad. ❤️

I'm not sure either but I can consult my canning Bible when I get home.

Nope, not I, I don't care for radish. We grow for fodder for cattle.

If you're going to pickle them, I think water bath is fine. Pickled items have lots of vinegar, which makes them acidic.

Remember to get the 5% acidity vinegar. Someone on here was warning that some jugs of vinegar are being sold as 4%, so read the label.

Radish are not a fav here. But, I’m thinking pickled seed pods might be more to our liking than the actual radish. Just not sure if they should be fridge pickles or canned. My dilly beans are canned and still have a bit of crunch. But, cooked radish does sound pretty gross, so I don’t know.

One of the things I have been making with my cherry tomatoes is a "poor man's pizza" which is basically toasted bread, some miracle whip, sliced tomatoes, cheese, and a pinch of italian herbs. Just toast everything in a small toaster oven for about 10 minutes and presto, fast pizza. I just bought some pepperoni slices to add to my poor man's pizza for the next time I make some toaster pizza.
OOH, good idea! I'm not a fan of miracle whip, but once I have basil, I'll substitute it with pesto and that can be a "go-to" recipe for when I don't feel like cooking.
BTW: blanching green beans for 3 minutes pretty much cooks them completely. The result after freezing is overcooked green beans. Kind of like canned beans. So I don’t blanch them that long. Sorry.
I blanch them by putting them in the microwave on high for 2 minutes, with a little water in the bottom of the container to steam them. Seems to work just as well.

I started some seeds for cabbages and cauliflower, that I can harvest in mid/late fall. I planned on some basil and leeks too, but for the life of me I could not find my seed packs. I might have used up all the leeks, but I could have sworn I saw the pack of basil just the other day. Maybe I dreamed them?! So I ordered more - which means I will find them soon.

All I did in the garden today was train the cukes and butternuts on to their trellises, because WE GOT RAIN!!! Woo hoo - not a lot, but enough to green things up a bit.

OMG you're making me drool! That looks sooo good. This is the first summer in a very long time I don't get to have a yummy BLT. I miss that so much. Hopefully next year...

Huh, that's a great idea that I just might try! Seems easier than boiling a big pot of water. Thanks for sharing, I have a big container to blanch today.
