What did you do in the garden today?

Good afternoon all. I did some picking in the garden this morning. I picked up the rest of the butternut squash. There are 8 total. Small but well shaped. After two years of absolutely no squash, this makes me happy. I picked more cherry tomatoes and a few SM tomatoes. I got 2 from the nightshade garden and they were bigger and more robust looking than the ones in the big garden. I also picked 2 jalapeños and some more lima beans. I have a brandywine that is finally starting to ripen. Out of three plants I only have 6 tomatoes. I won’t be growing them again. Very disappointing and a waste of garden space. This has been a rough gardening year with all the rain, so I’m happy I’m getting something of a harvest. Still waiting for more corn to develop. There are still plenty of ears on the stalks, I’m hoping dry sunny weather will help. Still no sign of summer squash developing. There’s no shortage of pollinators just a shortage of the female flowers. Today’s haul.

Those look great. Lots of tasty meals with that haul.

I have 7 full size apple trees, and 2 mini apple trees. 4 different varieties of apples.
I'm going to be making juice with my new juice steamer and canning the different varieties separately.
My Pixie Crunch are always a small apple so making juice is and exciting idea. They have a pinkish tint to them and it showed up in the juice today.

I have a pomegranate tree that I am going to be making homemade jelly and syrup with.

I was going to ask why so many of you pick tomatoes that are just starting to ripen, instead of waiting for them to ripen on the vine. I always thought tomatoes would taste better when ripened on the plant, but I guess I was wrong, and that's just a myth. I'll start picking my tomatoes when they "break" from now on.

I try to wait until my tomatoes are ripe on the plants before I pick them. I'm not up for picking tomatoes before they are ripe.

Actually the vine ripened ones are a wee bit tastier, however tomatoes ripen from the inside earlier than we can see it. The longer we leave them on the vine the more tempting they are to bugs, chipmunks, squirrels and any other hungry critter poking around for a snack. Picking them when they are super ripe also runs the risk of them going bad quickly if you don’t use them up quickly once you do pick them.

once I watched a youtube video where a university professor grew different veggies in plastic bottles (vertical). when asked about toxicity he said that plants were able to protect themselves. unfortunately I didn't bookmark that video.

 Well, I have a hard imagining that the minimal smell of plastic would damage the seeds. My seeds will be in paper bags or other plastic bottles inside the plastic ammo box. It's not like I am putting our leftover soup in the ammo box. Although I usually opt for reducing the one-use waste plastic in my life, I am still a big fan of plastic storage totes, plastic bottles, plastic 5-gallon buckets and other stuff.

Just wanted to add my Happy Birthday!
