What did you do in the garden today?

Carrots have their second leaves!

We have some BIG bees coming to the Tithonia blooms, their abdomens are looong. I didn't have a proper camera, but got a couple pretty good shots with my phone:

Anyone know what kind of bee they are?

And let's not forget the writing spider that's spinning beautiful webs amongst the canna lilies:

The scary kind! 🤣🙈

Love those pictures of the deer protection. I think at one time you were considering a high fence or something around your garden. Did you find the frames and wire on the raised beds to be more effective or less costly? That's what I think I would do. Just protect the beds that the deer might eat.
It would've been too difficult for me to try and build a fence around the entire perimeter of the garden. Welded wire fencing rolls have an excellent memory, and it would've been nearly impossible for me to try and unroll it from post to post, then attach it, by myself.

Four feet wouldn't be high enough, so I would've had to install more fence up above the lower section. I just wasn't able to do it.

So protecting the beds individually was more manageable for me. Cheaper, too, because, you know, free wood! And it's still a work in progress. No telling how it will be set up next year.

If the fence was around the perimeter, deer would be able to see good landing spots on the other side, so they might just decide to jump over even an 8 foot fence. I don't think they'd risk trying to jump into one of the small raised beds. And you can see that over the large bed I strung a web of rope to give the deer pause if they were thinking about jumping inside.

Yeah, I remember you talking about the deer in the garden problem. I'm glad you got it fixed enough that you had a good year.

I had a really good gardening year as well. Coming to end now, but really enjoyed it while we could. We filled up a few racks in the freezer with fresh garden food to enjoy this year. And, we ate more fresh food directly from the garden this year as well.
