What did you do in the garden today?

I tried the salt separation method on some black walnut nut meats. About 3 cups of nut meats. I had already hand sorted. I was impressed on how well it worked. Pic of what settled to the bottom. A few nut meats settled. I can see us using more nuts without having to be so careful of shells.

I remember the first time I went down south - I volunteered with the Red Cross in Louisiana after hurricane Katrina. The first night I got there we went to the grocery store & I swear I could not understand a single bit of what the girl working the register said to me. Even after she repeated herself. But anyway, I had NO clue what all y'all meant. Y'all is not something I'd ever heard before, except on tv maybe. & then never all y'all! It was all confusing to this northerner. Now I say y'all all the time, it's so much better than the 'you guys' that we use up here. Though I'm still not sure I would use all y'all correctly. :lau
FWIW, I've lived in the South for 20 years now and I still don't say y'all or all y'all.... 😂

My mom, from the Harrisburg area, used to be able to listen to a Keystone Stater and peg within 50 miles of where they were from. Sadly, accents are slowly dying out, thanks to our traveling and resettling populations. Regional accents are still there to a degree, but localized ones are becoming more and more scarce.
I just saw a clip on the news on that, how accents are disappearing. Sad.

Do you say 'you guys'?

I got so much done today, pretty much more than I've done in a year. I'm sure I'll pay later...but I got pots emptied & put away, all the garden decorations put away, hoses gone, 2 bags of leave litter put up for the birds for the winter, compost turned. I heard the word 'hard freeze' on the news - was kinda just hoping for a frost first for my dahlias. From 85 directly to a freeze. :idunno

Strip steaks for dinner, just about the last of the cow from the freezer, the new one is hanging & will be ready for pick up next weekend. :drool I didn't get any soup bones because I didn't think I'd be able to can broth, but I'm already kinda regretting it I think.

On accents if I am in MN I am a southerner. If I visit relatives in MO I am a damn Yankee. My relatives in southern IL have a accent.
My step dad was from Arkansas. He moved to Michigan in his 20s, I think. When he retired, he served on the volunteer ambulance crew in our (tiny) northern Michigan town. When he was on the air, people wondered "who was that southerner on the crew?" When he went to visit his sister in Arkansas, she said he sounded like a yankee.
