What did you do in the garden today?

So I made myself a homemade screening panel to manually sift the dirt. After several hours, I've hardly cleared a 4 ft x 2 ft area. My DH thinks I've lost my mind.. 😂 And my back is killing me now, but hey... I've got clean dirt!

Mintues, with no back pain...

Our municipality has a compost pick up ( conceivably for natural gas production) , but since we built out bins last spring we have had to put out the compost bin for pick-up.

I think it's great that your municipality has a compost pick up service. That's pretty progressive compared to my area. The nearest large scale municipality composting is about 90 miles away. I'm not sure when they get their organics.

Anyways, did you mean to say... ?

 I'm not the grammar police, just trying to understand your fine comment in full.

Assuming you intended to say you don't use the compost pick up service anymore, I think that's great. I have been able to keep all our organics on my property and reuse, recycle, compost everything for almost 15 years now. It makes me feel better not hauling that stuff to the landfill, but even more so that it makes wonderful compost for my food gardens.

i had to buy a new wheelbarrow 😂 I put the old one ( with a flat tire) under a leaky pipe to catch the rainwater, a maple sprouted, and at first, I thought I can just twist it away, then, when I finally needed it, I felt sorry for the tree and thought, just leave it be, now, it has gotten so big I can’t pull it up or twist it away, so I got a new wheelbarrow

:lau That's an amazing photo! Funny story, too. If you really want to remove the wheelbarrow, they come apart and can be put back together again. In fact, if I buy a new wheelbarrow at Menards, It comes in kits and you have to assemble it at home.

Did I mention I bought a solid wheel for the old wheelbarrow ages ago, and never got around to changing it? I did try a few years ago, but the screws were rusted so badly, they had united with the metal, and so that’s why I let the wheelbarrow serve as a water reservoir 😉

I call that a rust weld, and it can be next to impossible to remove the bolts and nuts. However, sometimes you can spray penetrating oil on the bolt and nut, let it sit for awhile, and then maybe remove it. Another option is to heat up the bolt and nut with a propane torch and that might help loosen it up a bit. Generally, when it comes to rust welds on old bolts and nuts, I just take out my reciprocating saw with a metal blade and cut off the old bolt. Chances are that if you even remove the old rusted bolt, you won't be able to reuse the old bolt and nut again.

Other options I can think of are using a grinder with a cut off disc or using a hammer and chisel to break the nut or bolt for removal.

I have used all those different options at one time or another, depending on the condition of the rusted bolt and nut. Every rust job seems to be different.

For outdoor use, I recommend getting a bottle of Permatex Anti-Sieze Lubricant. It prevents bolts and nuts exposed to the weather from rusting together. I even use it on our lake dock nuts and bolts and it works great. One bottle would probably last a lifetime for most of us. I got my bottle about 5 years ago and still have 3/4 of it left.

I did try the penetrating oil solution without success 😬 I think the whole carriage is so rusted, even if I were to cut off the bolts I’m not sure it would be stable anyways, I should have put it in the shed the instant the maple reared its head 🤪 But thanks for the info about permatex!! The new wheelbarrow will be grateful 😉
Instead of the garden, I went into the woods and got a lot of mushrooms ( boletus)

I must admit my friends did all the bending, cutting and carrying 😳

Hahaha, yes, that’s exactly what I meant to say! 🤪. I clearly didn’t proof before I hit post. Yeah, I’m grateful for our compost pickup. I think they use the natural gas for local buses and such. I should probably look into it. But I’m very much looking forward to putting our home grown compost on the garden beds next spring!

Good afternoon all. Got the bamboo around the top of the garden and fairy lights are attached too. Now I just need to move dirt and get ready for planting. Going to concentrate on filling up one bed with the soil on hand mixed with perlite so I can at least put in a few things, particularly carrots. Still have some gnomes put in there too

Got the picket fence up, but the chickens kept after the aloe I had in the large side of the sink so I put a metal agave in there instead. The little watering can has solar lights as water so I put some glass pebbles in the bottom of the sink. Think it needs another package or two though

Can’t wait to see what it all looks like at night!

I like your new wheelbarrow. My wheelbarrow is inside my hoop coop, holding two clean bales of straw, covered by a shower curtain. I didn't have enough strength to control the wheelbarrow anymore, so it was just gathering rust.
