What did you do in the garden today?

My Baker Creek Seed order:

Lots of Nastursiums, pansy and viola. The leaves and flowers of Nastursiums are edible. Pretty sure the other flowers are too. But, nice to have pops of color throughout the garden areas. Plus, the Nastursiums just get better looking as the garden gets tired looking.

I’ve also ordered marigold seeds from another supplier and will plant those too.

The Burpee order:

Marigolds, one more Nastursium ❤️, and some poppy. The pole beans produce well for me…but the reviews on their site say some people didn’t get much…but the name “Lazy Housewife” is funny and really says it all- it’s an heirloom that makes even a lazy homemaker happy bc it produces well with little effort. I don’t grow it every year, but I will this year.

The First 13 pea is a great grower and producer…but soooooo many tendrils. But, it is tasty so I buy it. Oddly the garden spiders seemed to gravitate to it too. But, my guess is bc it was on the sunnier, west side of the bed rather than the variety of pea.

I have an order from Baker Creek that's on the way. I hope I luck out and find that my free seed packet is the peppers I still need to get.

You like nasturtiums, huh? Nice variety!

I saved marigold and zinnia seeds from the ones I grew last year. Don't know if they'll grow, but I'll find out.

Territorial Seed Order

We grew the yellow Cube of butter” last year…SUPER producer. So, I bought more. Trying a few green zucchini, based on the descriptions. We like green and peppers, so always trying new. I tend to find Territorial a bit pricey across the board, so I tend to place smaller orders there.

One stellar grape tomato is their “Ruby Crush F1. I forgot to order more, and this packet is empty 😭. I can recommend it though. Tons of uniform and tasty tomatoes. Worth the higher price (I bought these a few years ago, so don’t know today’s price).

Seed savers order:

Just a few things. It’s been a few years since I ordered from them. But, a few things caught my eye.

Borage: bee magnet!!!! So, this will be a permanent plant in/around the garden.

Cucumbers: always trying something new. White cucumbers, maybe they will be good, or maybe they will die like 90% of cucumbers do in my garden.

Rutabaga…new variety to me. Not only is rutabaga pretty good, it’s fun to say and spell!

Johnnys Seeds: new to me, first year I’ve ordered from them. Their packaging is pretty basic, but here are some seeds I ordered that are more interesting:

CUCUMBERS, my nemesis. These are quite pricey seeds, but have lots of disease resistance and look like good candidates to produce tasty cukes. <crossing fingers>

Carrots:

We enjoy carrots, and always grow a variety. Trying some new red and yellow types, along with a white variety. Over the years, we’ve tried red, yellow, purple in addition to a variety of orange types. But, many colored ones (R Y P) leave us a bit unsatisfied, either with flavor, or germination, or growth. So, these looked like possible good options.

Now I’ve shared my new seed orders, some with known to me varieties, many new. Sharing to let others know what I’m trying, and for encouragement to all of the gardeners out there.

One thing I’ve learned about gardening is that every year bring one challenge or another. But, hopefully, I’ll have success with this or that. My beans are nearly always successful, so I grow them. In addition, beans for drying are even less stress, and fun to shell when dried. So they get a spot every year.

The marigolds and Nastursiums are typically successful- especially marigolds. The marigolds are pretty, treats for the chickens, and can be pest deterrents, so they get a spot too.

Cucumbers are my challenge, so I keep trying!! But, seriously, they are my nemesis and I would be hard pressed to get enough to pickle even a single jar worth on any given day.

Yes. Yes, I do have way more seeds than I need. But, I also have 2000 sq ft of cultivated ground and raised beds, not to mention other places I can plant the flowers beyond the 2000 sqft.

Hopefully others are getting their seeds selected and ordered and ready for planting time!!

Nice. I always get their catalog but have never ordered from them.

I'm trying onions from seed for the first time. I usually buy 300 or so plants from Dixondale, but they are getting expensive. Last year they didn't do well but could have been the weather.
I found Patterson seeds from seeds and such . I'll see if I can grow those. I will have time to order plants if these don't germinate well.
