What did you do in the garden today?

Haha. I thought it was strange too since I have two packets of carrots and one said to plant Feb-March but the other says to plant in fall? I've never planted carrots before, so we'll have to see how they do.

There are many diff carrots. I just read a pack that said plant early in dry soil.....even in Cali, not much dry soil in Jan/Feb.... I used carrot tape for the first time last year, it worked great, earlier attempts failed to grow anything from seeds, but these grew fast......the gophers loved them....

I stood there and looked around.... with glorious anticipation of what is to come

....



Knowing that all that hard work of turning the soil over and over.

Letting the suns rays cook down all those rich organics that we added over the winter and letting our chickens

remove all those nasty bugs and weeds and also helping dig up those garden beds, so the beds that once looked like this......... soon became...

This!!! Then all the hard work starts when we take all of the hundreds of seeds we started and hoped and prayed

that they all come-up and then we thank God that all those crazy tips we read about

and read

and

read from all the crazy gardening people on BYC posted, actually do work.

So we plant all those seedlings into our beautifully transformed dirt fields of glory.

And those little bundles of God's miracles turn into........

A glorious jungle of wonderful flavors and a vast variety of spectacularly filled baskets of goodness that we can enjoy and hand out to friends and family......

Ain't life grand...

What did I do in my garden today? I went out and shoveled yet an other 6" of snow off my hay bale cold frame. Then I swept the snow off the chicken's sun room so they can have some solar gain.... boosting the temp from a high of 24 outside, to 50+ in their sun room... then I spent some time drooling over hosspak's luxuriant garden... dreaming of warm soil.

That was what it looked like just last November. With a few upgrades and a few little changes in orientation and placement and now with the palm tree gone (more sunlight) and a start that is 2 months earlier than last year.... We will see what happens!

Ugh! Gophers yes! Annoying little critters. I actually fell into a large hole not sure if gopher/rabbit/ground squirrel made (my guess rabbit) one time in my yard. It was rather shocking to be standing there and then all of the sudden sink down to my knees. I surprisingly don't have much problem with them in my garden. I planted some carrots in a big container and some in the ground. We'll see how they do.

That was what it looked like just last November. With a few upgrades and a few little changes in orientation and placement and now with the palm tree gone (more sunlight) and a start that is 2 months earlier than last year.... We will see what happens!

Oh, the cruelty of your verbal barbs!!! We're supposed to get down to -5 tonight. Yes, that's MINUS 5 F. This winter has been BRUTAL. But, I'm anticipating an early spring. In spite of the cold, I'm planning to go out and plant some lettuce and perhaps some spinach in the very well ventilated green house. (the plastic is breaking down, and the cats have added further ventilation.) More sun is a good thing... and IMO, if you don't loose a few crops b/c you planted them too early, you're not planting early enough! Besides, that's what they make plastic and mulch for. If your garden is mulched, you can just pull the mulch up over the first plantings when frost threaten, and pull it back when it warms up again.

Ditto! It's been insane here. We've regularly gotten negative double digits during time. I have my beds planned, seeds ordered and calender filled out. Come on spring!!!

I used letuce tape and really liked the spacing-- perfectly even!! Will try to make our own tape this year--though I do wonder if fertilizer is embedded into the tape?

It won't really matter re: the fertilizer in the home made tape. Your seedlings won't need it right away, and a heavy dose of fertilizer actually inhibits sprouting anyway. Better to feed them after they're up.

I don't know about you, but so far, winter has lasted about 3 years here!
