What did you do in the garden today?

Besides watering I planted some carrots in a pot. Trying my hand for the first time at container gardening. I already have some lettuce sprouts coming up!!

We are having a very unusually cold spell. It began in December and seems set to last a while longer. Usually, we have just a few days in January when the daytime highs are just below 30C and the nighttime lows around 20C. We have had a month now of lows down to 11C. That might seem mild to many folk on BYC but the locals here are struggling to handle it. Houses don't have heating. The poorer homes don't have hot water. Blankets are being given out to those in need and many don't have enough warm clothing.

We are OK but the cold dry weather is causing a shortage of wild food for our free range banties. We give them chicken food and rice but they also need what they can find on the land and it seems rather sparse just now. Yesterday, I walked around with the banties looking for a predatory bird that has spotted the chicks and noticed that some had slipped out through the side gate, over a narrow road and onto the land opposite in search of food. While I was working out how best to get them back home, one of our cats saw them. She went through the bars of the gate, looked around for any danger and, like a sheep dog, gently rounded them up and herded them back home. Remarkable!

Nothing much grows in the dry season that needs attention and we aren't attempting to grow vegetables during this cold spell. However, the mango bushes or laden with flower buds so we may have a bumper crop this year.

I watered the herbs. -supposed to have some really cold low temps (18 - 20 degrees) for Texas over the next few days. -needed to get everything watered well before covering. -checked the blueberry bushes today. -beginning to put out new growth. -roses are starting to show new growth, as well. -looking forward to preparing the garden for spring planting!

Here is the list so far, all in one breath; Sweet Aroma Tomatoes, Roma toms, Oregon toms, Supersteak toms, Beefsteak toms, Cherry Delight toms, Habanero peps (yel & oran), Cucumbers (Strt 8), Armenian cukes, Pickling cukes, Zucchini bread, Yellow squash (yucky), and Sugar pumpkins... Exhale!!!!!!! Inhale!!!!!! Later we will be starting onions (red, yellow, and green), bush beans, herbs, spices, and lettuces. And other stuff I probably forgot... Hopefully getting rid of a couple of roosters and possibly getting a couple of replacement hens (blue eggers). See ya out on the range....

What planet is that? lol. Yes, I know it. I'm here in Southern Riverside. Lake Elsinore. Just wondering why you are planting so early?

Haha. I thought it was strange too since I have two packets of carrots and one said to plant Feb-March but the other says to plant in fall? I've never planted carrots before, so we'll have to see how they do.
