What did you do in the garden today?

Are kangaroos in Australia like deer in the US? If they can reach it, they can eat it.

This may sounds silly and childlike, but I think it would be so cool to look out and see kangaroos in the backyard. We have moose which are pretty awesome, but no kangaroos. :)

yes, that's exactly what they do but they don't eat away till it's all gone, they tend to have a nibble here and a nibble there. Before my veggie patch was enclosed they'd come along and take a tomato off the plant, have a single bite out of it and fling it away. It is cool looking out the window and there they are, even after three years of seeing it I never tire of it. Sometimes the chickens and they share the food I put out for the kanagroos but I try to discourage it as the kanga food has molasses in it and I'm not sure if that's okay for them. I buy proper food for the kangas, mainly to discourage them eating my flowers and I always put out water otherwise they drink from the birdbath and trample my flowers in front garden.

I hope I am not boring anyone with these

Definitely not boring. That is so neat. I could have kept watching for another hour. I even called my husband to see the chickens just hanging out with the kangas. I'm jealous! Maybe if our mama moose comes back this winter I'll try to get a video. She has had twins right off our property for the last three years.

I could watch that all day! I just cannot imagine looking out my window and seeing a kangaroo. Or a moose, for that matter! I'm on the east coast and we get deer. LOTS of deer but that's it. The deer are wonderful - they do eat my garden but we've found that yellow police-like tape strung about at their chest height will keep them out - but a kangaroo or a moose would be absolutely unbelievable.

Guess I'd better watch what I wish for. We do have bear around here and I'd just as soon they stay away!

when I lived back home in Scotland we had deer, but not in my garden as we lived in a small village. They were evrywhere else though. I got used to them so hee in AUS Kangaroos are a novelty for me

Sometimes it's not so neat... right now I have a full grown male in my garden growling at me so I thought I'd spray him with the hose and show him who's boss, darn if he didn't enjoy it!!!!! The full grown males can be rather scary.

Yikes! I've heard they can hurt you if they put their mind to it. Don't think I'd want to challenge a growling kangaroo!

Believe it or not, I've got a large male deer here that's decided my yard is his. He will stamp his feet at me and snort when I come outside and he won't run off when I try to "shoo" him away. Frankly, I'm a bit intimidated by him, which is exactly what he's going for.

yeah it's difficult when they think it's their yard. This guy has 'equipment' that reaches the ground on hot days, that means he is an old dude and not to be messed with. My hubby calls him YoYo LOL . I reckon he'd be 8 feet if he stood up on his hind legs

Quote: I just read your article on how you got locked in your hen house, scary. It's an awesome hen house, ours is inherited and we have made a few changes but as we mostly don't get freezing temps we have left it pretty much open. We lock the main run and the baby chick run, the hen house is inside all of that but it has no door, a blessing on hot summer nights. I have a fan in there for them for hot nights

Just when I thought it was time to tear out all the tomato plants, I noticed today that many have a bunch ready to pick. Now I have read that tomato greens are toxic but I have read many BYC threads where people are tossing the greens in the runs.... How can this be?
