What did you do in the garden today?

Today, I ordered 50 white spruce trees. About four are for the yard to fill gaps in the row and the rest are for the farm. It was the last lot of that tree in that size. They were the only thing we were sure we were getting this year.

Blueberries, another josta berry, a tart cherry, a pear, and two paw paws are still on the short list. They will come from a different place if we get them.

Just a question for ya...I'm contemplating replacing the existing 1 acre or so worth of lawn (mixture of grass, some weeds including purple & yellow nutsedges) with a low growing wildflower alternative. Everything I am researching says to kill off the existing lawn totally, prior to planting anything else. The question is how. We prefer to avoid chemicals here. Layers of cardboard, newspapers or polyurethane would be quite a challenge for such a large area, plus it is windy here. Some suggest vinegar, or salt. No way to salt, that would ruin the soil. I try to be organic for my flock when they range & I enjoy a good chickweed, dandelion greens, scallion & scallion chive salad myself.

I already have a few areas where I've planted wildflowers, & it is awesome to see birds, honeybees & butterflies thrive. I do not mind white clover, dandelions, chickweed & other beneficial "weeds" either. The nutsedges & Bermuda grass are a real PITA, though.

This is the goal, nature & honeybee friendly.

Any ideas? I figure if anyone has them, they'd be here.
Thanks so much!

do you have ducks and geese? even chickens in a dry season can decimate most of grass.

As one who gave up on her country lawn. I just chucked out wild flowers and clover and let it do it's thing. It needs far less care than a lawn, less water and nutrients, and usually takes over the lawn quickly.
I do have quite a bit of white clover, which I love, but the nutsedges are tough. Never had this weed before, so I'm shocked at just how tough it is.

Received my last order of seeds!

Will try lentils again (utter fail 2 years ago), but I now know to plant in cool spring, around April and not June. I chose Black Beluga, and French Green.

Will try Cowpeas too. So many varieties to choose from, but I picked green Dixie, Hercules, and White Whippoorwill. Any southern gardeners have growing advice, let me know!

Also, bought winter squash, peppers, and greens.
