What did you do in the garden today?

I wonder if we could go a week without eating any nightshade. We eat a LOT of tomatoes and a fair amount of potatoes. Hubby eats a lot of hot peppers.

I don't think hot peppers are bad for anything. they are good for rheumatism, cold, etc. I sometimes have problem with sweet peppers but never with hot peppers. btw, if I could not eat nightshades I would starve to death, lol.

For over 20 years I have been reading books, newspaper stories, and magazine articles from nutritionists, scientists, physicians, etc. about inflammation and Nightshade vegetables. It's not new, nor is it just from social media. It's included in any number of books.

What the person in that one source said was that Nightshades seem to make inflammation worse in some people, others aren't affected. Maybe we have a borderline allergy?

If you can eat Nightshades and not be affected I am happy for you. I, and many others, can't.
I am one of these people who can eat them and am not affected. Though, my gut is a tank unless I eat something processed heavily. I can eat things off of the counter, off of the floor, been fermenting in the fridge for several weeks... the only thing I don't mess with, old meat and molds (aside from cheese mold, I just cut that off). And pink things. if its pink bacteria I don't eat it. I generally use my nose to guide me to what I can eat. Some day it'll bite me, I'm sure. I've puked up some things back in college, but they were leftovers that I kept in my truck with me when i was homeless.

What I have learned, as someone who only uses "backyard chickens" and "aquarium co-op" social media platforms. All of my knowledge is from family tradition; sourdough, fermenting things, and pickling things.... that's where it's at. My guts are happy as far as I'm aware. I eat fermented food, and pickled food every day.

I do feed my small human "processed foods", dino nuggets, spaghetti ohs, sometimes lunchables (getting him to eat is a pita sometimes... and he hasn't put on a pound in a year no matter what I feed him). But DH and I don't eat commercially processed foods. I mean, you know, I buy skinless chicken breasts when its on sale, breast halves most of the time. We don't eat much red meat; can't digest more than 4oz if it isn't cured and dried first. We process pigs yearly between family members. Eventually I'd like to have the property space to produce broilers for our families. We don't host the hogs; we make the eggs and rotate crops across our family plots. This year I'm green beans, canning tomatoes and canning pumpkins; plus I generate jam for all of us, and simple syrups. And beer, we make lots of beer and wines. Everyone loves that.

Today I got things watered! That's it. I'm chasing a mole.... I assume, it may be a young stupid gopher. My gopherhawk traps will make work of it soon, I'm sure.

Oh my, then I'm golden! LOTS of foods, veg included, make me gassy.

Hubby is tolerant of my gassiness. As I told him, "You know what happens if you don't fart? You explode!" :lau

Marigolds helped a lot with my tomatoes, keeping soldier beetles away. The flowers seem to be a "trap crop" for Japanese Beetles too. Since I harvest those for the chickens, that's a help for me.

My chiropractor has helped me immensely.
My husband and I compete with gas. One time we were driving to work together at 4am, he farted... instead of rolling his window down, he rolled mine down! It was 40 degrees outside and raining. LOL.

7 years later today, I blocked off the whole kitchen entry with a fart of ultimate power. It took 4 minutes to clear so he could walk to the car. :D Hehehehe.

Do bell peppers upset anyone's stomach here? I can only eat them well sautéed. Other peppers do not give me indigestion...weird right? The orange, yellow & red bells do not bother tummy as bad but those green ones, whoa momma, they actually give me like an acid refux reaction.

the same here with green peppers. fresh in salads are more digestible for me.

Thank you! We have 9 more to build and then we are also going to dye them to match the house. We have so much clay, we can't get anything to grow except okra! Lol

I also love your use of the cinderblock holes to plant in! Those are so great!

As someone who was born and raised in Oklahoma, I can appreciate your "Okra" statement. When we were kids our parents used to send us out to the side of the roads to harvest okra. Bleh. Mom... "Go pick weeds for dinner and get out of the house!" What a sham! Lol

Does powdered turmeric lose its effect? I have some that is YEARS old.

I dye easter eggs with old turmeric powder. I let them sit at least overnight and they get a beautiful colour. I also use purple cabbage to get blue eggs. some of them I dye first blue then put in turmeric water and they become green. some I dye half blue, half yellow and where they get in contact there is a green ring.

DW is trying to cancel my weekend plans. Not going to let her. A road trip Sunday to IN. Says too far to go alone. Well come along. I had someone to go along but his wife interfered. Now they are going to stay in Indy and stop by the event Sunday. I let DW cancel a fishing trip last May over the same issues. This has got to stop. If she gets mad I will buy more plants. She will still be mad but I will have new plants. No need to waste a good mad. :D

just buy new plants. not a good idea to drive with your sore foot. your wife is right this time.

We love okra - especially in gumbo. But it definitely does grow like a weed anywhere it's planted.

And thank you! I planted mostly marigolds and nasturtium in the holes

I have been looking for the purple potato seeds for years with no luck. then I found purple peruvian potatoes at the supermarket (less than half price than the seeds would cost). I let them sprout. they all sprouted from one side only so I cut the halves and cooked. I have been curing them now and finally going to plant them!
