What did you do in the garden today?

Don't let your chickens in it if you want to eat any of it yourself. 🤣

Have fun with it! Use lots of compost, mulch the top of the soil to retain moisture and prevent weeds, never be afraid to ask questions, and share lots of pictures! 💚
oh yea its def blocked off from my girls , they would love to get in there. i will share lots of pics soon :)

They delivered the peanuts for boiling to the house (cajun style, DH & I Love boiled cajun peanuts!) but stuck the corn package in the mailbox down the road. So I will plant 3 types of corn this year. I'm starting the seeds indoors tonight after work.

100+ Glass Gem Corn Seeds Non-GMO Popcorn Delicious Jewel-Toned, Glass-Like Kernels, Grown in USA. Rare! Ornamental and Edible! HARLEY SEEDS https://a.co/d/j04diQK

I am so looking forward to planting them! The safe date here to plant outside is April 15th & after.

I hope mother nature cooperates. So far, it's been a very wet year! More rainy days coming this week But at least no Temps in the 20s.

Question...I have 2 different areas I can plant corn. I will do rows so they can pollinate. One area is very ready, rich, composted soil. It happens to be near the adjacent farmed fields. There is flooding back there when we get lots of rain, like we've had this year. There is a part that doesn't flood, a very rich berm we've created, so I can plant there. Right now the greenest, low growing, delicious, chicken friendly weeds grow there naturally. 😋

My question is...I don't know if they'll plant their corn, or soy this year. The type of corn they do plant is geared for feed, we call it cow corn or horse corn. Does it matter if I plant my rows of corn near that type of corn? Or should I avoid that? Just curious if that has any effect with pollination?

I've only grown 1 type of sweet corn in the past, not near anyone else's corn.
I shall live vicariously through you.... Can't wait to see how the glass gem works out. 😊

I've heard that they don't do well left on their side. :hit

Did the vet diagnose her problem?
No, we don't know what took her down. She didn't have any normal symptoms of colic. Plus she took a big healthy poop when we rolled her onto the makeshift travois. It was normal so impaction or twisted gut were unlikely. She was breathing a little heavy but not terrible. Everyone has decades of experience with horses so between the collective group standing vigil over her, none of us could figure out what was wrong. Could have been cancer, heart issues, who knows... The only way to tell for sure is a necropsy which is very expensive and not really feasible to get such a big animal to the state lab an hour away.

I probably make them peeved, but when a doctor says something, I at least want to know why. Give me the reason. At least we can look it up ourselves these days.

I know most docs want to prescribe some darn magic pill. The latest greatest so called medicine that the drug pushing pharmaceutical reps are toting. Oh, never mind about the side effects...We've got more pills to push for those. Some docs are great, but some really tick me off. You know who they are, they've got this "I Know It All, I'm Smart & You Must Do What I Say" attitude. Guess what, newsflash, you're not a God, you're human, just like the rest of us & ya know who knows my body best? Me!

I've had a few docs actually get angry because I did not take some darn pill I already knew didn't agree with me, or the radiation doc that blew a gasket because after cancer the 3rd time, I had surgeries to remove what kept coming back & remove what fed the cancer, instead of being his radiation Guinea Pig for 6 more months.

Sometimes you just gotta stand up & say, ya know what...this is My Life.
That's why I say I am allergic to your drugs and I been living in my body so news flash bumhole I know me better than you do. Going to medical school doesn't make you know me better than I know me.

I'm very sorry. :hugs

It’s been 9 days since I sowed all peppers, looks like most are sprouted! About 14 varieties. And around 100 cells planted. So, hopefully tomorrow I’ll start some tomato seeds. Only a few tomato plants this year- probably 2 plants each of 3-4 varieties we’ve enjoyed.

We make “pepper sauce” from our peppers. We let them ripen to full red then wash, chop and freeze. After season is done, we make pepper sauce with the frozen peppers (partially to mostly thawed), a set amount of salt and vinegar - we put all in a blender, and keep adding peppers until it reaches a set volume. This way we know it all has a set amount of vinegar and salt. It gets bottled and aged in the fridge about a month then into the freezer so it is never cooked. This past year we were a little delayed picking the peppers, and we grew some different varieties, so they were slightly drier (less plump) than in the past and we are enjoying a thicker sauce this year. We made some hotter sauce (not really that hot, but a nice level of heat) using sweet and very hot peppers. Then, some pimento only, and some Anaheim only.

The jalapeños were sliced and either pickled or made into cowboy candy. Both are really attractive bc we ripened some to full red, so the jars have a little more color. The jalapeños are pretty spicy though!

The pepper seeds we started this year include:

Pimentos: sheepnose, topepo rosa, Ashe county, Bulgarian red, ruffled red, karma, and round of Hungary.

Italian type: tollis sweet, bridge to Paris, stocky red roaster.

Other type: Anaheim Collage 64, Lesya, Fish.

We bought some Caribbean peppers last year -supposed to be mild, but they were not. I think they were mislabeled habanero or scotch bonnet. Might buy some of those again bc their flavor is good and when mixed with the mild one, make a nice sauce.
