What did you do in the garden today?

hey everyone im new to the page and wanted to say hi ! . we started our family garden last year and had a lot of fun with it. hoping to get some good results this year as well. any tips for a small backyard garden ?
Start small, figure out the sunniest places, decide if you're better off planting in the ground (poor soil or standing water issues for instance) think about seasonal or longterm planting, seed or seedlings? Gosh there are lots of things to consider, but don't let that stop you from getting started. :D:wee

And welcome to the party!

Hubby and I have both told our doc, no pills, unless absolutely necessary. Hubby is on one that is (anti-seizure) and that will be it, hopefully, for a long time.

My LDL is borderline high, and I'm taking steps to correct that. My HDL is wonderful (a doc friend of mine said, "Wow, that's really good!), so my doc is fine with me working on my LDL through diet and exercise.

He listens to us, and that means a lot.

We make “pepper sauce” from our peppers. We let them ripen to full red then wash, chop and freeze. After season is done, we make pepper sauce with the frozen peppers (partially to mostly thawed), a set amount of salt and vinegar - we put all in a blender, and keep adding peppers until it reaches a set volume. This way we know it all has a set amount of vinegar and salt. It gets bottled and aged in the fridge about a month then into the freezer so it is never cooked.
Whenever anyone says they froze bottles I wonder how it doesn't break the bottles. And do you ever do just sweet peppers for bottling? Like just mild anaheims and bells?
That's a lot of peppers! Have you ever considered making a fermented pepper sauce? I think that's how Tabasco sauce is made.
I bought some fermented pepper sauce at a farmers market last year and it was so good, I might have to try making it myself. There's a lot of canners here in town so I like to make gifts that are uncommon.
I haven't seen my actual primary care doctor in well over 10 years. I use the nurse practitioner whom I absolutely love...
Same, I don't remember the last time I saw a regular doctor and what I do remember wasn't pleasant.

We had a few hours of lovely sun and I dashed out to plant the cool weather starts that I bought yesterday during the cold nasty pouring rain and I am so grateful that I got that opportunity. We don't get snow that lasts after 10 am but we get torrents of cold rain and have been for the last couple of months. Other than 5 days of lovely fake sping weather a week ago. But I'm so, so happy with today!

Last year I mentioned that I was going to try to propogate some cuttings from the native red huckleberry bush at the edge of the woods here. And today I finally did it.

The most successful red huckleberry bushes grow on tree stumps, and Douglas fir is preferred. As the plant grows into the stump, its roots grow along the dead Doug fir roots into the ground, which keeps the plant supplied with moisture during dry spells.

I filled two pots with rotted wood dust and dirt from a melting D. fir stump in the woods.

I took five promising red huckleberry cuttings and trimmed them. I lightly scarified the ends of the twigs, coated them with rooting hormone and set them into the pots.

Hope it works. There's an old Doug fir stump on my place where I want to plant a red huckleberry.
