What did you do in the garden today?

We selected land that had not been farmed, is far enough away from other farms to avoid drift, and is high enough not to get hit with run off, so yep, we were concerned for sure.

My mom doesn't get why we are growing "the hard way" - no chemicals, all natural, losing a tenth of what we grow in some cases. But you get it : )
It's pretty cool to control what you eat. In a year or two we'll be closer than we ever have been to that goal.
The trees here are so big many of them are probably a hundred years old. There is no pasture so I have nowhere to grow grain. But for sure no one has been using roundup here. The two properties that border us are raw land. Only two other families on our street and their land drains away from us. I am trying to grow things without cutting down all the trees. We had to have some removed to make a place for the sheds and a road to the river, but we saved the biggest ones.

I was so depressed when we lived in FL, felt like I was ready to die. Now that I am here, I just feel so much better. Not everything is peachy, but I have so much more purpose in life. I suffer IBS as well. Guts feel like there are rocks in them most of the time. Way over weight, next thing you know I will be diabetic. But I am hoping I can lose some weight in this heat. Worked once for me in TN, but I got depressed during winter and gained it back. Yes, the chickens are amazing. Don't know when I will be able to get some but hoping this fall. Miss my girls. Have you ever had goats? They are wonderful. Missing them too. But I am working towards getting some.

Hubby says he doesn't want goats, but I'm working on him. He spends countless days clearing underbrush and bush hogging, when a solid (really solid) fence and some goats could help a lot.

I'm glad youre in a better place. Purpose is important. One thing I've found is going to the farmer's markets, even though it is brutally hard for me, is GOOD for me. I connect with people, introduce them to new flavors, new vegetables, new ways of thinking about food and I swear I leave with more ... energy? More ... happiness? than I started with. Connecting here is also really helpful.

Yes, I am enjoying being on here, even without chickens. I have no friends locally, so friends on here are great to have. You inspire me with all you do. Keep on trucking. I need to get to sleep. Never know if the cats will let me sleep. Good luck on your baking tonight and the sale tomorrow.

Wow. You all have been busy! I made the 3 hour trip (each way) to see my son today. We tried to go fishing but it was WAY TO HOT to even get a nibble. We ended up in the swimming pool instead. I found a local friend that has an abundance of tomatoes so I'm going to pick some up on Sunday to make sauce. I'm growing the same type of tomatoes as usual. They are slicing and eating type, not really a sauce type.
I also found 2 other co workers that think they or their parents have extra cucumbers for me! So hopefully I'll get to try making sweet pickle relish as well as tomato sauce.

I got out to the garden to find this yesterday. I planted plenty of flowers in my veggie garden.
What is this plant 7-21-17.jpg

Is any one else worried about the Roundup in our food supply? Makes me wonder if that is what caused my IBS. Even if you bake your own bread, it is probably in the soil. Farmers use way too much of that stuff. Someday all that soil will be useless. If people only knew what is in the food, they would not want to eat it. These big companies disgust me.
Oh yes, I very much worry about it. I truly believe that all the chemicals in our environment are the cause of a lot of the cancer in the world today. We won't use any of that stuff on the lawn, veggies, etc.

We bought the land last fall, and are building our house as time and $ permit. This is slow going in part because we get things to a point where it's safe (like, house sheathed and roof on), then move to next priority (coop so we would get eggs this year), then onto raised beds with plastic stretched over - two fields about 3/4 an acre total.

It's also slow going because I'm in a wheelchair most days so when I say we I mean he (my awesome hubby).

Everything "we" build is designed with my ability to access it in mind, so i can get to the coop nest boxes from the outside, and from my wheelchair, for example.

We are selling at the market, making as much from my baking (bread and herb infused sweets) as the veggies, but now with tomatoes fully in that will be the main focus.

Really were trying it out this year to see if how we like it, and if it is sustainable (for my hubby)
... so much work. So far we love it.

But even if we decide to scale back, we'll still produce our own food using sustainavle, responsible practices.

And we will grow our farmstead by adding a few pigs, a few cows, and bee hives next year.

It might take us two years to finish the house, but we're fortunate to have a fully functional (mostly) rv that meets our needs as we make steady progress : )

Coop pic was before the nest boxes were added and it still doesn't have the pallet siding finished, lol.
You are really inspiring - doing all that hard work while in a wheelchair - you go, girl! Concerning the farmer's market, you are really living my dream, there. I would absolutely LOVE to sell veggies, and baked goods at the market. But here in MN, there are so many farmer's markets that it's hard to get into one. They have so many people selling, that they want you to grow things that other people aren't already selling. Unfortunately, we want to sell the same things that others sell, so it really didn't work out for us here to join the farmer's markets. I hope it all works out well for you, though. I saw all the photos of your baked goods on your other posts - everything looks delicious! Strange, I suddenly have the urge to do some baking today - lol. :drool
