What did you do in the garden today?

I cut my Chickens Lettuce down and gave it to them so it can regrow back up. Later I will pull the chickens beet greens up and then reseed that. I put in a garden just for them next to the coop's. Mine is in the back yard!
I thought about that, but i am not even done with my garden yet. Plus their yard is very shady. Good for you, i am sure they love it!

Today was a pretty busy day! Trimmed the faded stalks off the Stella d'oro daylilies & the Lolipop lilies, weeded the rose bed for the 4th or 5th time (a few years ago, I planted Star of Yelta morning glories on the fence behind my roses, and they self-seed so prolifically that every time you weed out all the seedlings, within a day or two, there seems to be hundreds more - not kidding! they are only allowed in ONE bed now, and I have waged war on all the others), also did some weed-whacking in the yard, and thinned out the radishes. Then came in to cool off and make dinner. It's almost time to eat now, thank goodness. I'm starving!

My poor radishes have most of their leaves chewed off! Oh gosh, so many things are invasive in FL! Everything grows like crazy there! And there is no winter to take a break from yard work. Sounds like you got a lot accomplished today. I lost track of whether it was 350 or 400 gallons of debris i cleaned up today.
Just got a call from DH, he made it to Portland, ME! So one more day of driving should get him to NS!

Oh my, what's chewing the leaves off your radishes? To be honest, I don't think I would like living in FL - I'd be scared to death of the pythons, alligators, and other dangerous species! Plus, I do enjoy winter (not as long as we have it in MN, but I like it for a few months), and just like having the four seasons. Are you originally from FL?
Yes, I was also wondering where Jen is today. I hope everything is okay.
Have fun at the store tomorrow. I always love going to the home improvement stores, but usually get carried away in the garden shop!

Mostly the dangerous critters are in the everglades or the ocean. Winters are beautiful and mostly cool. That is when people grow gardens there. I am originally from Upstate NY. Went to college in NS and stayed from 1974 to 1992. Then we moved to FL. Spent 7 years in TN and back to FL about 3 years ago. Had to help family, and am really happy to be in VA now. Where have you lived?

Maybe we can organize a seed swap for august? Who's interested? We could either each make multiple packets or assign who sends their packet to whom, so we each only create one packet.
I'm happy to send seeds to anyone who sends me a private message with a name and address. I'm an avid seed collector and love to share. I can make a list of what I have and you can tell me what you want.

A seed swap sounds like fun, although it may not work out for me because in Minnesota, we're a little behind the southern states, I think, and I may not have any seeds that are ready by August, other than petunias and other annuals. The perennials here won't set seeds this early...:(
That is fine. I always have enough to share. Getting seeds anytime they are ready ...even in winter is a treat. Some plants may be annuals in some zones and much longer lived in others. My little tropical garden on the deck has plants started from seeds I brought back to Oklahoma from south Florida when I visited my dad the last time. For me, trying to get unusual seeds to sprout is a challenge. My Bird of Paradise was started in a terrarium 10 years ago and finally bloomed last winter...for the first time.

In the garden today, we picked the Jalapenos...20 plants that were simply loaded. Tomorrow after taking a neighbor's cow to the vet, I will turn them into jalapeno relish and bread and butter jalapenos. image.jpeg

I cut up the cucumbers that were gathered the past few days and am brining country pack dill slices and spears and more senfgurken pickles. I always put the recipe card on top of the bowl while they brine.
We got a surprise shower blow up this afternoon...maybe a 1/10 inch of rain....but a gallon of thunder, lightening and downburst winds! Both dogs headed for cover. One under the desk and one in my lap...the 84 pound baby!

Where is Jen today? Probably worn to a nub, poor girl. Hope she gets rested up.
I am going shopping tomorrow, hope to get a big garden cart and building supplies.:clap

Hubby and I drove up to cleveland for Christmas in July with the family. His brother passed just before Christmas so the family in cle postponed. Now we're driving back to KY, should be rolling in around 2:30 am : (

But it was great and we all voted to do it again this coming christmas. Still do dinner on Christmas day but do the gift exchange in July.

Looks like you guys had productive days : ), and I saw some thoughts on exchanging seeds - i think it would be fun no matter what's in it - I like the idea of shouting out what you might wish to get, but also like the idea of getting some random seeds or bulbs to try.

Sooooo tired think I'm going to rest my eyes for a little while. Hey, eggs sitting out all day in this heat - think they'll be safe to eat? If not by us, scrambled for the girls?
